Kathy was born April 15, 1916 in San Francisco, California and passed away March 2, 2019 in Fresno, California. She was a resident of Fresno for almost her entire life and was the second of three daughters born to her parents James Butler and Pauline Dwyer. Kathy’s sisters Patricia Whitt and Jane Marie Finnegan preceded her in death. She was a graduate of St John’s Elementary and High School as well as Fresno State, where she received a degree in Education.
After college graduation she taught elementary school until 1943 when she answered her Country’s call to serve in World War II as a member of the Women’s Army Corps. She underwent basic training in Des Moines, Iowa and had field posts in Richmond, Kentucky and Fort McClellan, Alabama. In 1944 she was stationed in New Guinea serving in the Executive Office of the base. Upon discharge in 1945 she worked for the Fresno-Madera Farm Credit in various administrative capacities, retiring after 25 years of service. Kathy was very involved in the American Legion Post 509 and Women’s Post 367 occupying the office of Post Commander in 1960. It was through her involvement in American Legion activities she met and married Les Carmine, who was also a veteran of World II. Les preceded Kathy in death.
Kathy was musically talented as a piano player and choral participant. She was a member of many Catholic church choirs in Fresno, including those at St. Johns Cathedral, Sacred Heart Church, St. Helens Church and the Newman Center at Fresno State. Kathy was part of the Sacred Heart Choir that sang for Pope John Paul II in his visit to Los Angeles and Mass celebration at Dodger Stadium in 1987. She was also very active in the choral groups New Wrinkles and the Retired Teachers Chorus. She had a passion for painting in both water color and oil, winning awards for her work. Kathy particularly enjoyed trips to Yosemite for painting inspirations and always seemed to be seeking improved skills through educational classes.
Kathy was a devout Catholic and rarely missed weekly Mass or a day without prayer. Her steadfast faith was the source of strength for her independent, positive outlook on life, no matter the challenge she faced. She was great listener, always seeking to learn and viewed each day as a source of joy. She was a true delight to be around with her positive Christian attitude, infectious laughter and memory for the songs of yester year. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Kathy is survived by her niece Shelley (Jim) Stahl and nephews Jim (Gail) Finnegan and Tom (LaDonna) Finnegan. Kathy’s family wishes to thank all who visited and cared for her over the last several years, particularly the wonderful staff of Caring Homes. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Kathy’s name to The American Legion Federal Post 509, 3509 N. First, Fresno, CA 93710.
