HI Grandpa, so thankful to have you in my life for the time it lasted.  You were such a great grandfather, father and husband.  You are very much missed!  Glad that you are resting peacefully now.  I can imagine what you might be doing in heaven, riding the train with an eagle on your shoulder, taking pictures as you pass heavens lighthouse.  One day ill join you there! Don't worry about us now, we are living on with your love held close to our hearts.  Love you so much grandpa :)

     What to say ? You were my favorite Father-In-Law !! I will always be grateful to you and Helen for raising my husband the way you did.He is a Great man,I love him dearly.I have you to thank for that.
Mike always spoke so highly of his parents, its easy to see why.I was so nervous the first time I met you(Mike and I having previous marriages,and blended family)....But you were both so inviting and funny. You made me feel excepted right away.You were wonderful from the beginning.
It always makes me laugh when I remember how many times you told Mike(laughing) "You have your hands full" when you spoke about me.....(soooo true !!)
So how does one honor the man who is so important to so many people for different reasons ?? I found a poem "The Legend of The Dragonfly", it was perfect.It tells us that life does not cease to exist, The adventure simply continues.
So for every story you shared , we will remember fondly...I look forward to listening to the many new adventures you've been on since you left.I look forward to hearing your wonderful contagious laugh, and I look forward to hearing you remind Mike That he has his hands full.

Dad,
I intentionally wanted to wait a little while before writing in your book.  It has been about 4 weeks since your passing and while I know we will all be able to handle things, know that you are missed very much.  You were such a wonderful father to me and I have always tried to emulate you in the raising of my own kids.  I guess we both did a pretty good job.  You mean the world to me, I love you and I miss you very much. Know that Mom is in very good hands and we will take good care of her until she comes to be with you. I promise I will look after and take care of Mom for you.  I know you missed her 80th birthday but I took care of it or you, I know you would of sent her red roses because of your love for her, so I sent her red roses for you. Grandpa - I have tried so hard to be strong these last few days.  But as I sit here writing to you, I just don't know how we will go on without you.  I know we will all be together some day, but I want you here now.  I want your help working on my house.  I want to hear your stories.  I want to see your smile.  I miss you so much already.  Everything reminds me of you.  I just hope you knew how much you meant to me, and how much I loved you.  I learned so much from you, I look up to you, and I will spend the rest of my life trying to continue to make you proud to call me your grandson.  I know I will go around and tell everyone, including complete strangers, how proud I am to call you my grandfather.  I haven't and maybe never will have the kind of passion you had for train stations, but please know that it is now my honor and privilege, to carry on your train station collection.  I love you Grandpa.

I set here thinking of something I could say good about you, but the space isn't big enough. You're the brother I never had. Rest in peace, my brother and great friend.

It does not matter how old a Marine is, or whether he dies of old age or on a distant battlefied. I always feel like I lost another brother. I guess that is the reason Marines are the best because of the bond we share.

All men must die, the difference is some die as great men and some die just as men. Grandpa was a great man and lived his life to the fullest. He had a great impact on all that knew him.

Oscar was a good man and a wonderful Grandfather. He will be missed. Our condolences to all in the Gassaway Family.

Many great memories of Oscar, one  favorite is taking Jennifer over to Oscar and Helen's house in Fountain Valley to trick or treat when Jenni was about 7. She was dressed up as a clown, I hid so Oscar would not know it was her - Jenni rang the doorbell Oscar gave her candy and then Jennifer just stood there thinking her Grandpa would recognize her but with all of the clown makeup he did not. So finally he asked her,  What do you want Bozo!?! Jenni said GRANDPA!! Oscar was so shocked it was Jenni and gave her a big hug. It still makes me smile when I think about it.

Rest in peace Oscar.

Dearest Helen,
It’s with such a heavy heart that I write you my condolences; I will miss Oscar very much.  I am grateful that my children had such a wonderful grandfather, especially since he was the only one Kevin and Amanda were blessed with here on this earth.  
I carry with me such fond memories of our family gatherings, particularly during the holiday seasons like Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas and birthdays.  We had such fun, didn’t we!?!  I remember Oscar showing us pictures of his latest train stations or his newest addition to his eagle collection.  The Christmas town you both so proudly displayed each and every year.   The countless stories, jokes and all the laughter I will always cherish.
I am praying God gives you the comfort and strength you need at this time.
