Ruth Shirley Grunwald

Ruth Shirley Grunwald, a long-time resident of Fresno was born on April 2, 1927, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and passed away peacefully on July 30th, 2024 at Nazareth House. Ruth was the only child of Art and Helen Ortlieb. Ruth married John Grunwald and shortly after moved to Fresno. They had seven children.

Later in life Ruth had an adventurous spirit for sailing, hiking, and traveling the world with her companion of 20 years, Sanford Moose. In her golden years her dedication to animals was a comfort to her. She donated to the World Wildlife Federation.

Ruth is preceded in death by her parents Art and Helen Ortlieb and her youngest daughter Joan Chastain.

She is survived by her children Mary and husband David Bruce, Jim and wife Barbara Grunwald, Lois Grunwald, Carol and husband Tom Illingworth, Julie and husband Paul Johnson, and Janet and husband Mark Rhodes. She leaves behind 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandson.

Ruth was the heart of our family.
