Shirley Jean Springer

Shirley was a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She enjoyed gardening, baking, traveling and shopping at Gottschalks. Shirley spent a lot of time tending to her yard, but her roses and camellias were her pride and joy. She would often share a jar full of her flowers with those who stopped by for a visit. She was very good at all of her hobbies but she was

even better at taking care of her friends and family that she loved so dearly.

Shirley was born on May 3, 1930 to Leo and Ethel Budde in Fresno, California. She was an only child and had fond memories of living on her parent’s dairy as a little girl. Shirley graduated from Central High School and Fresno State. While at Fresno State she met the love of her life, Ray Springer, and they married in 1953. Three years later they started their family and had their first son Jeff, followed by John, and then Dennis. Shirley was proud of her Home Economics degree and drew up the plans for their

forever home built in 1968. She was very talented in the kitchen and loved to make a festive table for each holiday dinner. She proudly sewed her wedding dress as well as many of her and her boys’ clothes when they were younger. She was a room mom at her boy’s schools and a team mom for many of their sports teams over the years.

As a grandma, she was always happy to babysit and she would often show up with new outfits for the kids - usually from Gottschalk's. Shirley and Ray were part of the Fresno State Baseball Dugout Club and were active members of Peoples Church. Shirley didn’t like to fly, but she enjoyed traveling around the U.S. by bus with the church’s Active Adults travel group. She also enjoyed bible studies and the ladies’ luncheons at the church.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Ray, of over 66 years. She is survived by, son, Jeff and his wife Lori of Wichita, Kansas. Son, John and his wife Lisa of Clovis, and son Dennis and his wife Andi, of Hanford. Her grandchildren and great-grand children include Curt Benson (wife Sherry), Brett Springer (wife Melissa, children Violet, Lee and Grant), Mark Springer (wife Kaycee, and son Skyler), Shanna Shaw (husband Robert, children Savannah and Parker), Shaylene Lanier (Boyfriend Kevin, daughter

Rowan), Sammy Springer (fiance Alyssa) and Will Springer. She was also blessed by having life-long friends she stayed in touch with throughout her lifetime.

Her family would send a special thanks to the staff at The Grove Assisted Living and Bristol Hospice for the loving care they provided for Shirley. They would also like to thank the Whitehurst Sullivan Burns & Blair Funeral home for their caring guidance through this sad time.
