Sterling graduated from Roosevelt High School in Fresno. He served in the United States Army as a Military Police Officer during his enlistment, and was stationed in Korea.
Sterling was an avid fan of watching football and NASCAR. He had a deep love for animals, caring for his dogs, cats and other pets with great affection. He enjoyed the outdoors and took pleasure in feeding wild birds, including hummingbirds, and nurturing his beloved plants.
Sterling will be remembered for his dedication, love of nature, and the joy he found in life's simple pleasures.
Sterling is survived by his wife of 45 years, Rhonda Sherrill, his children, Aimee Dougherty and her husband Traver, Jennie West and her husband Shawn, and Sarah Sherrill, grandchildren Lindsie McKnight and her husband Patrick, Emma West, Keith Dougherty and his wife Megan, Keagan Dougherty and his fiancé Bri, and great-granddaughter Violet.
A graveside service will be held, Wednesday, April 23, 2025, 1:00 pm at Belmont Memorial Park.
