

Taro Bernerd Asami was born on May 24, 1932 in Houston, TX to Hanna and Yoneichi Asami and was the oldest of five children. He passed away on December 28, 2020 after a brief illness. In 1941, his family moved to Los Angeles. When WW II started they were evacuated to an internment camp in Poston, AZ. After the war, Taro’s family settled in Reedley where he attended Reedley High School, Reedley College and later graduated from Fresno State University with a teaching credential. After graduation he joined the US Army, serving in the Korean war, and the National Guard moving up the ranks to Major. In 1954 he married the love of his life, Joy Kawamura, and together they had four children. Taro taught automotive class at Central High School, but when his father died in 1964 he left teaching to run the family business, Asami Texaco Service and Garage, in Reedley.
In 1995, Taro retired and enjoyed many great times with family and friends. He especially loved to fish, travel, fly military Space-A, and participate in activities at the United Japanese Christian Church and the Central California Nikkei Foundation. He was blessed to be married to Joy for 62 years. Taro will be remembered for his easy going personality, his sense of humor, his playful smile, his friendly and generous spirit, and his willingness to help anyone in need.
Taro was predeceased by his parents, sister Teruko, and wife Joy.
He is survived by his children Mark Asami (Diana), Julie Thomas (Arlan), Laurie Wong (Brian), and Gayle Matsubara (Greg), 11 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, brother Richard Kanji Asami, and sisters Alice Goishi and Lillian Garrigus.
