She was born in 1940, the seventh of eight children, to parents Clifford and Lois Swift in Alexandria, Indiana. Being born in a small town, the year before the United States entered World War Two, she saw the impact of rationing, the pride and heartache of service flags flown on front porches and victory gardens in the back yard. As a teen in the fifties, she grew up with Elvis, Buddy Holly and Hank Williams, sock hops, poodle skirts, the Red Scare, civil defense sirens and threat of nuclear war. Her father was a carpenter and custom cabinet maker, her mother a homemaker and mother of eight. All six of her brothers served in some branch of the military. These roots instilled a sense of pride in family, a cast iron work ethic and powerful patriotism that she passed down to her own family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Jack Swift, Jerry Swift, Neil Swift, Robert Swift, Rex Swift, Max Swift, sister Joan Ice and infant daughters Lisa Ledbetter and Cathy Ledbetter.
She is survived by son William Ledbetter and wife Denise of Prosper, TX, son Randy Ledbetter of Guntown, MS, grandchildren Andrew Ledbetter and wife Amanda Ledbetter, Cody Nichols and fiancé Lauren Janco, Sara Beth Sikes and her husband Dyllon Sikes, and four great-grandchildren.
