Born on December 1, 1936, in Morgan Town, Texas, Don grew up as a middle child of ten children in a sharecropping family where he learned the importance of integrity and a strong work ethic. As a teenager he and his brother-in-law Gavin Weaver drove tractors for a farmer.
Don joined the US Army in June 1957 and was a Vietnam Veteran who served his country for twenty years. He earned four medals including the Vietnam Service Medal with three campaign stars and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
Don met the love of his life, Sandy, while stationed in Ft Sill, Oklahoma. His first sergeant Henry Rushing introduced Don to his daughter Sandy and they soon started dating. Don and Sandy were married fifty-six wonderful years and had one beloved daughter, Amy.
Following Don’s retirement from the Army in 1977 he worked in management for a home improvement store chain before becoming a truck driver. Don really enjoyed driving a truck and retired from Acme Brick twice as a truck driver.
Don took immense pride in being a father and was very close to his daughter Amy. He spent countless hours volunteering as a Band parent and as a Girl Scout leader when Amy was in school.
Don started camping as a Girl Scout leader and fell in love with camping and travelling. He and Sandy sold their home in San Antonio, Texas to live in a 40-foot camper travelling the country for ten years before settling in Frisco, Texas to live near their daughter.
Don was an active member of First United Methodist Church in The Colony where he was known for his bright smile and infectious sense of humor. He was proud to have served his country and was a member of The American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
