Edward “Mr. Ed” Eugene Hess was born July 6th, 1936 in Greensburg, Indiana. His nicknames were Ed, Little Ed and Eddie. Ed played basketball in high school and loved to watch college basketball. His favorite team was the Indiana Hoosiers. Ed was always a positive person and looked at the best in everyone. He loved God, his wife and his family and he never met a stranger. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and loved boating, four wheeling, Gospel and Country music.
Ed joined the Navy at 17 and served from 1954 to 1957. He, along with two of his brothers, worked at Ace Muffler in Chicago for many years. He then learned the painting trade and worked for the City of Chicago from 1970 to 1979. One of his favorite memories was working at Soldier Field, where one of his jobs involved striping the football field. He married Sharon Harvey on June 2, 1973.
Sharon and Ed moved to Springdale, Arkansas where he coached boys’ basketball for years, touching the lives of many. He worked for the Veterans Administration in Fayetteville, Arkansas where he was a painter for 20 years.
After he retired from the V. A., he worked part-time for Children’s House, the only center in Arkansas providing long-term treatment exclusively for victims of child abuse and neglect. He drove the bus for the children (from 6 months to 5 years old) to and from Children’s House. But this wasn’t a job, it was his passion for over 10 years. All the kids called him “Mr. Ed” and he was the first person they saw in the morning and the last in the afternoon. He loved “his” kids. He and Sharon moved to North Dallas in 2011 and settled in Prosper, TX.
Ed passed away on June 2, 2016, their 43rd wedding anniversary.
