Elsie was born on December 8, 1944, in Lorain, Ohio, and was the only child of Michael and Marie Schneider. She spent her formative years in Lorain, where she graduated from Admiral King High School. Elsie earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from Kent State University in June of 1965. While at Kent State University, she met the love of her life, Gary Paul Thornberry. They shared a deep bond and were married on June 18, 1966. She went on to receive a Master of Science in Education from Old Dominion University in August of 1974. Elsie dedicated her career to education, serving as both an English teacher and high school guidance counselor, where she positively impacted the lives of countless students.
Elsie will be fondly remembered for her kindness, warmth, and unwavering devotion to her family and friends. She proudly supported her husband, Gary, when he was a scoutmaster and her two sons, who both became Eagle Scouts. She later lovingly encouraged both her sons as they continued their education and academic achievements. She proudly watched Michael graduate from West Point and Matthew receive his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech. Elsie enjoyed reading, gardening, cross stitch, watching Jeopardy, and her beloved cats. She cherished moments with her children and grandchildren, passing down her passion for reading, her love of cats, and the Cleveland Browns football team.
Elsie is survived by her loving husband, Gary Thornberry, her sons, Michael and Matthew Thornberry, and her grandchildren, Evan, Reid, Carson, and Connor. She was predeceased by her parents, Michael and Marie Schneider.
