It is with deep sorrow and immeasurable love that we announce the passing of Dr. Eric John Schmitt, a devoted husband, father, physician, and friend, who left us peacefully on May 16, 2025, at the age of 55.
Born in New York City on October 29, 1969, Eric lived a life rooted in compassion, intellect, and an unwavering dedication to the well-being of others. A proud alumnus of the University of California, San Diego, Eric pursued his medical degree at Tufts University School of Medicine. He continued his training with residencies at Barnes Jewish Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital, and later completed a prestigious fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
Throughout his long and distinguished career, Dr. Schmitt was more than a physician—he was a gentle guide, a warm listener, and a source of hope for countless patients and their families. Known for his intelligence, quick wit, and generous spirit, Eric brought both levity and depth to every room he entered. Whether through his careful diagnoses or his famous dry humor, he made people feel seen, safe, and deeply cared for.
Eric was the beloved husband of Lucy Li Schmitt, his partner in life and in purpose. Together, they raised two daughters, Julie and Katrina, who were the lights of his life. The Schmitt family experienced a profound loss with the passing of Julie in 2019, a sorrow that forever shaped Eric’s heart. From that heartbreak, however, grew a mission rooted in love: Julie’s Land, the charitable organization Eric and Lucy founded in Julie’s honor, dedicated to promoting mental health awareness and advocacy for young people.
Eric is survived by his wife Lucy and their cherished daughter Katrina Emma Schmitt, who carries forward his kindness and strength. He is also remembered fondly by extended family, friends, colleagues, and the many patients whose lives he touched.
Eric’s legacy will live on not only in the medical advancements he contributed to or the lives he helped heal, but in the gentle, humorous, and heartfelt way he moved through the world. He made it better simply by being in it.

Julie’s Land Mission Statement:
"With bullying being so much a fact of growing up now, you’d think we’d be talking a lot more about mental health in our schools alongside meals, physical education, history and health. In most cases it’s not talked about at all. Children and young adults are left to fend off all manner of mental health issues on their own. To alter that trajectory, Julie’s Land aims to provide advocacy and support for the troubled through in-person connections in a safe haven. Join this journey to bring mental health awareness to the top of the menu in our children’s most formative years. They’ll come, Julie’s Land is here to let them in."
May Eric’s memory be a blessing and his work an inspiration.
