Gail Stewart Shoemate Binyon left this blessed earth peacefully on December 30, 2024 in Dallas, TX. She was born October 16, 1939 in Exeter, New Hampshire to Eleanor Arlene Moore Stewart and George Frederick Stewart.
Gail grew up on the family farm outside of North Hampton, NH and she spoke fondly of the livestock that were raised on the farm and the food they grew. She was especially fond of the wild blueberries and raspberries, which were her favorite. During her teen years, she enjoyed spending summers on Rye Beach and eating lobster. She reminisced about the summers she spent at “camp” on Lake Attitash canoeing, fishing, and swimming. She graduated from Hampton Academy and High School in 1957 and went on to graduate from The University of New Hampshire with a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy in 1961.
Her clinicals included the Bronx Veterans Hospital in Bronx, NY, Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington, D.C., National Jewish Hospital in Denver, CO, Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas, TX, Joseph P. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Brighton, Massachusetts, and Dallas Society for Crippled Children/Adults in Dallas, TX. These experiences shaped her skills as an Occupational Therapist where she worked in various facilities and hospitals in Albuquerque, NM, Las Vegas, NV and then returning to finish out her career in Albuquerque, NM where she eventually retired. She held positions as a clinician, a student educator, Director of Occupational Therapy and Director of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. She was intensely proud of her career in the medical field and was always happy to announce to anyone in her medical care team that her background was in Occupational Therapy.
As a college student, she had the privilege of accompanying her great Aunt Sadie Corp on a tour of Europe for two months enjoying all the luxurious places and people. She loved to travel back to New Hampshire regularly before her mother passed in 2007. She also enjoyed taking trips to the Mexican Riviera, Napa, CA, and Hesperus, CO with her husband Joe during their 31 year marriage.
She spent time gardening, reading, visiting her daughter and grandchildren as well as loving on various poodles throughout her adult life.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Eleanor M. Holmstrom, her father, George F. Stewart, and her husband, Joe E. Binyon. Surviving her is her daughter, Karin L. Cahill and husband Chris D. Cahill, her grandchildren Kelsi L. Cahill and Connor D. Cahill and the arrival of a great grandbaby in April 2025; stepsons, Robert E. Binyon and wife Carla, Russell Z. Binyon and wife Carmen, Michael L. Binyon and wife Terry, Stephen M. Binyon; four step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday January 25, 2025 at the Spiritual Center of the T. Boone Pickens Hospice Facility. She will be laid to rest in her family’s plot in North Hampton, NH sometime in late Spring of 2025.
