Geraldine Adelaide "Gerry" Asleson, age 86, of Frisco, TX, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2025, surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Gerry beamed with life, evidenced by her infectious smile and bright, shining eyes. She was known for her quick sense of humor and competitive spirit in the face of a friendly game, but Gerry's most admirable trait was her unwavering devotion to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Gerry was born September 28, 1938, in St. Louis, MO, to the late Emil and Clara (Beckerkord) Klein, the second of four children. She spent the better part of her childhood in Wausau, Wisconsin, before returning to St. Louis her junior year of high school. During her youth, she developed a passion for dancing, including the "jitterbug", and was known for teaching her siblings. A fierce protector, she was quick to step in between a sibling and any perceived threat. She graduated from Bishop DuBourg High School in St. Louis. After high school, she worked as an administrative assistant for Barnes Jewish Hospital. On Saturday nights, she could be found at the USO dancing the night away with her girlfriends. It was on one such night that she met her future husband, Orvis ‘Oz’ Asleson. She ultimately forgave Oz for his poor dancing skills, and drawn to each other by their mutual devotion to their families, they married in 1959.
After stints in Cedar Rapids, Oklahoma City, and Long Island, following Oz’s career at Collins Avionics, the couple ultimately settled back in St. Louis, where their two children, Ken and Gail, were born. Gerry was the ultimate mother. Though she initially did not drive, Gerry ensured her kids had every opportunity - walking or biking them to many a park, library, or dance lesson. She was also a loyal room mother, alternating yearly between her two children's classrooms. As her kids grew older, Gerry pursued a career in retail, which she balanced with ongoing volunteering at their schools, and later, her famous outings with her grandkids to the movie theater, McDonald's, or IHOP.
In her golden years, Gerry lived with both of her children for distinct periods of her grandchildren's childhoods. This afforded all seven of them a special relationship with their grandmother, colored by her many collections - from VHS tapes and DVDs to PEZ dispensers and state quarters - and frequent hands of her favorite card game "Books and Runs". She attended everything from recitals to sporting events and never missed a sacrament, wedding, or graduation, beaming with pride at her grandchildren's successes and special moments. But more than that, she was always ready with a non-judgmental ear, quick to empathize with any plight. Gerry's life was not without its challenges, but the resilience she displayed in the face of them was undoubtedly a signature of her spirit. In addition to her grandchildren, Gerry was fortunate to meet six great-grandchildren, and as she slowed down, little brought her more joy than watching them play. True to form, she loved her people fiercely until the end, and beamed with pride anytime she spoke about them.
Gerry was a faithful Catholic woman and believed in a loving and forgiving God. She attended St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Frisco, TX, and prayed the rosary every morning. Gerry was also a proud member of the Frisco Senior Center and spoke highly and often of her friends and the staff there. She was never one to miss a good time, from regular breakfast meet-ups with her gal pals to birthday bashes, Wii Bowling, and meals with "the Lunch Bunch". Her family greatly appreciates the companionship and laughter they brought to her life.
Gerry is survived by her children: Ken Asleson and his wife, Monique, of Frisco, and Gail Asleson Lehman, and her husband, John, of Carrollton. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren: Chelsea Lehman Duffy (Brian), William Lehman (Brittany), Michael Lehman (Alexandra), Christopher Asleson, Mark Asleson, John "Jack" Lehman, and Lindsey Lehman; and her six great-grandchildren: Evelyn, Nora, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Finn, and Lucy. Finally, Gerry is survived by her brother, Robert Klein, of St. Peters, MO, and sister, Marilyn Klein Steadman, of Sioux Falls, SD. She is preceded in death by her parents, Emil and Clara Klein, and her sister Jacqueline Klein Schulte.
A Visitation and Rosary will take place on April 10, 2025, from 4:30-8:30 PM, at Stonebriar Funeral Home located at 10375 Preston Road, Frisco, TX 75033.
