Gloria Mae Sparks was born in Port Barre, Louisiana on March, 20, 1935, to the proud parents of the late Frederick Sion Sr., and Louise DeJean. She was the 8th of 9 children, and she was the baby girl.
Gloria was raised in Opelousas, LA where she graduated from Holy Ghost Catholic High School in 1953.
After graduation, she subsequently moved to Port Arthur, TX., where she married George C. Sparks, Sr. in 1957. After working as a nurses’s aid with St. Mary’s Hospital, she turned her focus to being a devoted housewife and loving mother to their six children. She was an active member of St. John’s Catholic Church, where she served on the Ladies Auxiliary.
Gloria had a loving spirit, quick wit and engaging smile. She loved reading the bible, playing bingo, listening to Motown classics, and watching professional football or basketball on television. But all who ever met her knew that her favorite pastime was bragging on the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. Her family and friends will always remember her as a devout catholic and a devoted mother.
Gloria heard the Lord’s calling, accepted his call and peacefully flew away where she is reunited with her father Frederick Sion Sr., mother Louise DeJean, her sisters Mary and Blanche, and brothers Murray, Joseph, Jim Ray, Leroy, Marion Pete, and Frederick Jr. Gloria leaves to cherish memories six children: George Jr. and his wife Joan, Cheryl Banks and her husband Eric, Michael, Gloria Adams and her husband John, Sharon, and David Frederick and his husband Blaine Teamer; Nephews Michael J. Sion and his wife Linda, Michael W. Sion, and Mark Sion; Nieces Monique Sion and Violet Lynn Sparks; Grandchildren Justin, Christopher, Nnenna Ukpabi, Kenechukwu (Kenny), Joshua, Anastasia; Great-grandchild Donovan; Great nieces Yvonne, Kim, Kelley, Ebony, and a host of friends from Lindan Park Rehabilitation Center.
