John Walter Satterfield passed from this life on to his eternal home on December 23, 2016 in Plano, Texas with his family by his bedside. Walt was born on November 3, 1922 in McLeansboro, Illinois to his parents, Walter Raymond Satterfield and Nellie Bly Stanley. Walt was surrounded by three sisters and two brothers in a very happy home. He grew up in Du Quoin, Illinois- and although the three brothers lived in California, they tried to visit during the Christmas holidays and celebrate together at sister Ruby’s home with mom, pop, and sisters Louise and Juanita.
Family and friends recalled Walt as being curious almost to a fault. In fact, since he was always referred to by his middle name, Walter or Walt, everyone called him the “Amazing Walter”. Walt earned his living as a vending machine technician in California. Born with innate technical abilities, there was nothing that he couldn’t take apart and fix. He kept up his skills, repairing a Jukebox at the age of 90.
Walt loved his country and served in the U.S. Army during WWII in General Patton’s lauded 3rd Army. A true war hero, he was wounded during the Battle of the Bulge, and received the Purple Heart medal. Walt married Annabell Lee Coffell soon after coming back from the war in January of 1947. Annabell, the love of his life, passed away— but not before blessing him with two children, Laura Lee Satterfield and John W. Satterfield, Jr.
When asked, Walt would say his favorite place to be was at the lake fishing or in his garden tending his flowers. He was a fisherman’s fisherman- loving the challenge while enjoying the outdoors. He cherished getting up early on Saturday mornings to fish at Tulloch Lake until noon, and then holding a neighborhood fish fry later that evening. Walt took great pride in growing his beautiful roses and huge tomatoes. He water skied up to the age of 70 years old. Walt loved listening to good Country music, especially Buck Owens.
Walt was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Nellie Satterfield; his wife Annabell and his daughter, Laura. His legacy will continue on through his son, John Satterfield Jr. and his wife, Miriam of Frisco, TX; his grandson, John C Satterfield of San Francisco, CA; his granddaughter, Annabell L Satterfield of Mountain View, CA; and his grandson, Christopher J Espindola of Longview, CA.
Walt was loved while he was with us here on earth, and will be continued to be loved through time and all eternity
