Deeply loved and profoundly missed, Nancy Elizabeth DeWitt will be forever in our hearts. We sadly announce our beautiful mother’s sudden passing on June 26, 2024 at the age of 88. We take comfort in countless wonderful memories as we reflect on her life.
Nancy was born on April 11, 1936 in Evergreen Park, Illinois. She was the second of Thomas and Verena Colvin’s six children. She grew up in Downers Grove, a suburb of Chicago. She loved riding her bike, jumping rope, and ice skating. One of her favorite memories was going to the family’s lake cottage in Wisconsin.
After graduating from Downers Grove North High School in 1953, she took some college courses and began working as a secretary with Swift in Chicago. One day, a good-looking young man applying for a sales position checked in at her desk. Nancy convinced her boss to give him a chance. That silver-tongued salesman quickly swept her off her feet. On January 18, 1957, the two were married.
Within a span of fifteen years, Nancy gave birth to six children- three boys and three girls. In between chasing toddlers and rocking newborns, Nancy was feathering new nests in Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Texas. Dale was constantly on the road selling adhesives. Nancy somehow juggled a bowling league, bridge club, and a plethora of volunteer positions at the Catholic schools her children attended. The house with a pool and trampoline in Farmers Branch was always full of friends.
Dale briefly moved the family to Carmichael, a suburb of Sacramento, when he took a new job. Nancy could not get back to The Lone Star State fast enough. This time, they built a home in what was once considered Far North Dallas. A neighbor encouraged Nancy to take a training course to become a travel agent. She threw herself into this new role wholeheartedly and was able to take her family on fabulous vacations. She eventually opened the doors to Bent Tree Travel with her best friend, Robyn. Nancy took full advantage of the airline, cruise, and hotel perks and was able to see the world.
After retirement, Dale and Nancy relocated further north to Frisco Lakes, a Del Webb Community. They played bocce ball and volunteered with the Republican Conservative Coalition. Nancy was very patriotic and stayed informed on current events and candidates. Tragically, Dale passed away in September of 2016 from cancer.
Seeing her growing family stay close and gather to celebrate holidays and milestones was Nancy’s greatest joy. She adored singing along with Elvis and Engelbert, eating a very rare filet, drinking a glass or two of Cabernet, and savoring a bowl of cinnamon ice cream. Most of all, she enjoyed well-orchestrated practical jokes and belly laughs.
Nancy leaves behind her son Terry, his wife Susan, their daughter Audrey Beardain (Matt and son Ford) and their son Riley (Allie and son Thomas); her son Randy, his wife Michele, and their daughters Amanda and Chrissy; her daughter Michele Brown, her husband Dennis, their son Ryan (Katelyn) and their daughter Natalie Stroud (Max); her daughter Sheila Sergiovanni, her son Christopher and her daughters Katherine Gesalman (Alex) and Anna Granberry (Josh); her son Scott; her daughter Suzanne Monthofer, her husband Michael, their daughter Elizabeth and their son Thomas.
A mass will be held at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Plano, Texas on Saturday, September 7, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
