Sebastian Chadwick Ruffin, affectionately called Chad, was born on, August 21, 1982, by his parents, Karen Ruffin Johnson and Harold Williams, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Chad grew up on the Westbank of New Orleans with his mom, stepdad (Zarak Johnson), and his only brother, Shannon Ruffin. He was a 2000 graduate of Edna Karr High School where he was an all-star athlete on the defensive and offensive side of the ball.
Chad left New Orleans to pursue his love for football. He walked on with the University of Southern Mississippi football team, but later earned a scholarship after his freshman year. Chad wore #96 and was a part of that Nasty Bunch Southern Miss defense. He received two pieces of the Rock for blocking a field goal, to win the game, against Alabama and against Cincinnati. Chad was a beast in the weight room and on the field. His teammates and friends called him “Chop” after his favorite song, “Choppa Style.” Chad received his B.S. degree, in 2004, and a master’s degree in Mathematics and Sports Administration. After USM, he signed as a free agent with the New Orleans Saints and went on to play with the Tulsa Talons.
Chad enjoyed reading for information. He taught himself many skills that led him to receive several managerial positions. At the time of his death, he worked with Wells Fargo Bank, as a system engineer, and had just received a promotion.
To know Chad was to love him. He was always smiling. He loved giving and always supported his close family and friends. He cherished his role as a father to his children. After marrying his wife, Naomi, he adopted her daughter, Arielle. He has also maintained a special bond with his stepson, Andre.
Chad was preceded in death by his mother, Karen Ruffin Johnson, his grandparents, Braxton and Olivia Wallace, Hersey Berry, Lawrence Williams, Rosa Lee Johnson, and Uncle Henry Williams. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Naomi Ruffin; his children, SaMya Ruffin, Sebastian Ruffin, Jr., Ian Ruffin, Arielle Avery, Andre Hollimon; dad, Harold Williams and stepdad, Zarak Johnson; brother, Shannon Ruffin (Felicia); grandmother, Albertha Williams, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends that will forever celebrate his legacy.
