Sherry was born on April 24, 1945, in Littlefield, Texas, to J.R. and Cora Lee Nixon. She was raised in the close-knit community of Cotton Center, Texas, where she grew up as the oldest of six children. From an early age, Sherry carried a strong sense of responsibility, compassion, and faith that would define the rest of her life.
She attended Texas Tech University, graduating in 1967 with a bachelor’s degree in education. It was there that she met the love of her life, Richard Lee Gosdin. Their story began on the Texas Tech campus and blossomed into a beautiful lifelong love. They were married on August 19, 1967, beginning a marriage built on deep love, faith, and devotion that would have celebrated 59 wonderful years this August.
Sherry began her career as a schoolteacher in Ropes, Texas, in 1967. In 1971, she and Richard welcomed their first daughter, Shala Michelle, and just 14 months later, in 1973, Melissa Jo, lovingly known as Missy, arrived. With the arrival of their daughters, Sherry chose to step away from the classroom to devote her heart and time to raising her girls, a role she cherished deeply.
In 1980, the family embarked on a new adventure, moving from Lubbock, Texas, to Ruidoso, New Mexico. There, Sherry and Richard operated River Ranch Campground, a place that had long been special to their family after many happy weekends spent there in their small travel trailer. The campground became a place of community and hospitality, reflecting Sherry’s natural gift for making people feel welcomed and valued. In 1985, the family moved into town, and Sherry returned to teaching in the nearby community of Alamogordo, where she continued to inspire and care for her students.
After their daughters graduated from high school, Sherry and Richard returned to Lubbock. It was there that Sherry began her second career in real estate. Over the next 25 years, she built a highly successful business helping countless families buy and sell homes. Sherry loved getting to know her clients, and her genuine care for people often turned professional relationships into lifelong friendships. Her integrity, warmth, and dedication made her not only a trusted agent, but a beloved friend to many.
In 2016, Sherry and Richard retired and moved to Celina, Texas, to be closer to their daughters and growing family. One of her greatest joys in retirement was spending weekends at the family’s lake home at Possum Kingdom Lake, where laughter, meals, and memories were shared with family and friends who gathered there often.
Sherry was a devoted Christian woman who loved the Lord with her whole heart. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life and the foundation upon which she raised her family. Her children and grandchildren often joked that she had a “direct line” to God, frequently calling her when they needed prayer, encouragement, or wisdom. Sherry was actively involved with the North Texas Christian Women’s Connection, faithfully serving as a table leader for several years. Through her service and ministry, she formed many cherished friendships and touched countless lives with her kindness and faith.
If you knew Sherry, you likely saw her proudly wearing Texas Tech red. She was a devoted fan who rarely missed a game and cheered enthusiastically for the Red Raiders. Her Texas Tech pride was just one of the many constants in her life—along with her love for her family and her unwavering faith.
Sherry is survived by her loving husband, Richard Gosdin; her daughters, Shala Coke and husband Jason, and Melissa Baker and husband Rob; and her five cherished grandchildren, Zachary Coke and wife Kyla, Caleb Coke and wife Mallory, Natalie Coke, Morgan Cusano and fiancé Austin Cooper, and Calista Cusano. She was also blessed with three great-grandchildren, Mazen, Laila, and Korley Coke.
She is further survived by her siblings: Dwain Nixon and wife Cherry, Gerald Nixon and wife Rebecca, Benny Nixon and wife Vicki, and Bernadine Clayton and husband Glenn, along with countless nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. Sherry was preceded in death by her parents, J.R. and Cora Lee Nixon, and her brother, Lester Nixon.
Sherry will be remembered for her deep faith, her unwavering love for her family, and the warmth and kindness she shared with everyone she met. Her favorite scripture, Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” reflected the strength of her faith and the way she lived her life each day.
Her legacy of love, faith, and family will continue to live on in the many lives she touched.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
A Celebration of Life service will be held Friday, March 27, at 2:00 p.m. at Stonebriar Funeral Home in Frisco, Texas. In honor of Sherry, family and friends are encouraged to wear red or their favorite Texas Tech gear.
