

Phyllis Jean Washington Smith was born on December 28, 1947 to Webster Washington, Sr. and the late Pauline Evans Washington in Winchester, Virginia. Phyllis was baptized as a small child at John Mann United Methodist Church in Winchester. She attended Sunday school and sung in the youth choir. She was also a member of the young people department (YPD) where she worked very diligently along with her sisters Virginia Ann and Karline.
Phyllis attended Douglas School from elementary to high school. She graduated in 1966 (the last graduating class) and was the Valedictorian of her class. Phyllis excelled in academics and also in playing clarinet, sports, and home economics. She was awarded a four year scholarship to Virginia State University. Phyllis later returned to Lord Fairfax Community College to pursue her degree. Phyllis thought at some point in her life she wanted to be an airline stewardess (know today as a flight attendant) was interviewed and accepted but being young she could not decide what career path she wanted to pursue. She accepted a position with C & P Telephone Company in Frederick, Maryland. After leaving C & P Telephone Company, Phyllis went to work for AVTEX, where she was employed for 21 years. Soon after Phyllis was employed by Abex until she was stricken by her illness.
Phyllis departed this life on Thursday, June 13, 2013. Phyllis leaves to cherish her memories and carry on her legacy, her devoted husband, Willard Smith; father, Webster Washington, Sr.; three daughters, Yolanda Smith of Front Royal, Tia J. Doleman (Chris) of Ranson, WV, and Casey Smith (Kevin) of Front Royal; brother, Webster Washington (Phyllis); sister, Karline Evans Mason (William, Sr.); seven grandchildren, Kaelan, Dorrion, Dedric, Kirsten, Colin, McKenzie, and Kristopher; Aunt Ella Mae Finley, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
