Chace’s journey began on July 17th, 2003 at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, North Dakota. He was determined and fiercely independent and passionate about many things. He was truly an exceptional human being. His love of God’s creation, especially geology and volcanology, was evident early on, with one indelible memory of a three-year-old Chace educating everyone at Yellowstone National Park about Old Faithful (and the caldera volcano large enough to take out three states) as they stood waiting for the geyser to erupt. Chace devoured books at a young age, earning the nickname “Book Lawnmower” by his teachers, often sneaking them to bed and staying up past bedtime to read. He self-taught himself many things, including Legos, computers, automotive repair, photography, math, science, guitars, pyrotechnics and especially his greatest passion, weather and meteorology. He single-handedly built the 3,803-piece Lego Death Star at age seven and was scuba certified at age ten among countless other accomplishments. Chace loved sharing his encyclopedic knowledge on any subject and was always eager to put his gifts and talents to use.
Chace was tenderhearted and genuinely loved his family. He was a true friend who never knew a stranger. He would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his Father Joel Hahn and sister Ellie Hahn; his Mother Michelle Rieniets, stepdad Andrew Dullea and brother Ian Dullea; along with his grandparents Bruce Rieniets and Ruth Johnson, Lori Rieniets, Kathy and Keith Tysdal, and Michael Dullea; and his many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by grandparents Janet Dullea and Michael Laurence Hahn, and great grandparents Edwin and Muriel Rieniets.
Chace and his dad, Joel shared passions both in motorcycle adventures and scuba diving. Chace had his first diving experience while on a family vacation in Hawaii, where he was able to hold an octopus in his hand. Another memorable trip with his dad took him across 6 states from Colorado, Utah, Nevada, California, Arizona, New Mexico and back. They visited the Golden Arches, Grand Canyon, Lowell Observatory and Meteor Crater for some of the most memorable locations.
Michelle was the driving force and fuel for encouraging Chace to try new and sometimes difficult things. She taught him to ride his bike behind their house in Bozeman, Montana and drive his first car, a manual transmission Audi TT. Andrew loved to fuel Chace’s thirst for new big words and information and his limitless imagination. He encouraged and supported Chace’s faith in God and love of travel and technology.
Chace was his brother Ian’s first best friend and real-life superhero. Ian believed every word Chace said, and Chace said a lot! Chace was a fierce protector of his little brother and loved hiking and adventuring together. His sister Ellie’s fondest memories are going to Itasca and hiking and listening to his stories while camping. They played video games together and chatted quite often via text and or snapchat. She enjoyed following his adventures through Colorado, both his hiking, snowboarding and storm chasing.
Papa Bruce loved his “Little Putzer” with every fiber of his being and supported his love of aviation, sports cars, rock hunting, guitars, meteor showers, eclipses and encouraged and supported him every step along the way. Grandma Lori poured her heart into baby Chace and showered him with love. She was so grateful to have Chace live with her in her home in Colorado and will miss sharing hugs, conversations and meals with him. Chace loved being spoiled by his grandma Kathy’s meals, holiday parties, knitted and sewn treasures and her big-hearted hugs. He reveled in the opportunity to learn the way of working on a farm with Keith who guided him in car rebuilds, dirt biking, snowmobiling and the fun times they shared together.
Uncle Lee was like another father to Chace, and he encouraged him in pursuing all of his passions and introduced him to gold panning and bouldering. His uncle Lee Rieniets, aunt Michelle, cousins Austin and Alexis will deeply miss sharing holidays, adventures and passions with their beloved nephew and cousin Chace. He was an inspiration to his younger cousins. They were fortunate to share many adventures together, including South Padre Island, SpaceX launches and rapid unscheduled disassembly rocket parts collecting on the beach, Johnson Space Center, Killer Bee hockey games, climbing the peaks at Enchanted Rock, wading in the cool streams of Pedernales Falls, exploring many Texas limestone caves, skiing the double black diamond runs in Colorado, gold panning in Idaho Spring, Colorado, climbing Saint Mary’s Glacier, Colorado many times, Christmas tree hunting in the mountains, watching many firework displays, sharing mountain meals after our many hiking adventures, and many FaceTime chats his uncle and him had trying to diagnose vehicle or motorcycle gremlins.
Chace had many friendships through the years and will especially be missed by his close friend and storm chasing partner Elliot who helped him navigate the close-knit weather community in Colorado where he lived.
Chace has left a super volcano sized hole in our hearts and his life and memories could never be summarized. There are people we encounter in this life that change us. They show us a new perspective and introduce us to a new way of thinking, feeling, and living. The way they live their own lives inspires us to do better, to be better and to live better. They teach us not to take this life or this world for granted. To live for the moment and love for the ages. Chace was one of these people. Words on paper can never capture all that Chace was, nor will they ever adequately express the pain felt by his absence. Though his heart truly was too big for this little world of ours, there was so much more for him to do and be in this life. The light within him was so bright. May it continue to shine for others through all of us who he left behind. We are deeply grateful to God for giving us the gift of such a special person and will honor Chace by living enthusiastically, stopping to examine the little details and taking detours on life’s journey to study and explore.
