Dan was born on August 2, 1947, in Willimantic, Connecticut. From an early age, he carried a spirit that would come to define his life, kind, generous, and always ready with a joke or a smile to lift those around him.
He proudly served his country during the Vietnam War, where he demonstrated extraordinary bravery and selflessness. He served as a Sergeant in the United States Army and was an Airborne Paratrooper serving in the 173rd Airborne, something that he was very proud of. Dan was a decorated veteran, receiving honors including the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart, a recognition of the courage and sacrifice he carried with quiet humility.
Above all else, Dan was a family man. He is survived by his loving wife, Kathy Carson, his daughters, Danielle Ewing and Casey Carson, his son-in-laws Justin Ewing and Dallas Smilie and his three cherished grandchildren: Trace Ewing, Lyla Ewing, and Crosby Ewing. His family was his greatest joy, and he made sure they felt his love every single day.
Dan had a gift, he could make anyone laugh. His sense of humor was constant, effortless, and contagious. Whether through a quick joke, a playful comment, or one of his many “dad” moments, he found joy in bringing happiness to others. He would do anything for a laugh or to see someone smile, and that light he brought into the world will never be forgotten.
He also loved creating memories with his family, especially through vacations and long car trips. Those moments that were filled with laughter, stories, and togetherness became the foundation of a lifetime of memories his family will carry forever.
Dan was a devoted sports fan, cheering on the Colorado Buffaloes and the Los Angeles Angels with enthusiasm and loyalty.
To know Dan was to love him. He had a rare ability to connect with people, to make them feel seen, valued, and cared for. His kindness, humor, and love left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to cross his path.
Though his absence leaves an immeasurable void, his spirit lives on… in the laughter he inspired, the love he gave so freely, and the countless lives he touched.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A Celebration of Dan's Life will be held on Thursday May 7th, 2026 at 11am at Foundations Church in Loveland, CO, with a reception to follow.
