At a very young age he let his parents know that he preferred to be known not by his first name but just Rick. Rick grew up in Lawrence with his older brother Doug (now deceased) and younger sister Deborah. In high school Rick was an accomplished Gymnast and won many competitions and medals. During this time, he met his beloved wife, Barbara Thompson. The two quickly fell in love and married on April 29th 1972. Rick and Barb welcomed their son Shawn into world later that year and daughter Sumer six years later. Rick had an adventurous spirit and in 1979 decided Phoenix AZ had the opportunities he and Barb were looking for to ensure the family prospered. Rick had a strong work ethic and mainly worked in the manufacturing industry as a Buyer/Purchasing agent. While living in Phoenix, Rick loved to ride his motorcycle in the desert, go hiking in the high country and spend time with family and friends schooling them all around the pool table. In 2000 Rick and Barb set off on another adventure and moved to Colorado to be closer to their children and grandchildren. While in Colorado the family enjoyed skiing, hiking, motorcycle riding and generally having a real good time together. After retiring and moving to their dream property in the mountains of Northern Colorado, Rick was diagnosed with Kidney failure. Moving back to Fort Collins, Rick was then diagnosed with Parkinson’s and Dementia. Barbara of course was Rick’s primary caregiver over the last few years. With compassion and love, she ensured he was always comfortable and provided the highest level of care possible. They were able to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary together in April of this year. Rick succumbed to his illnesses on July 27th, 2022.
Rick is survived by his wife Barbara, children Shawn (Katie), Sumer (Jeff), sister Deborah (Bill). Granddaughters Kaya, Dailynn and Greta. Nephews Kyle and Kevin, Nieces Kelly, Kim and Christina. And of course, his beloved German Shepard Tanner.
