Born October 13, 1955, at Walter Reed Hospital, Washington D.C., he was the second of four children born to William and Ardith Cook.
An outstanding musician, Donnie was truly a master on steel guitar, banjo, guitar, and mandolin. His professional music career took him to venues across the United States and Canada. Donnie’s superb musicianship, dry humor, and on-stage antics made him a memorable performer.
Performing at numerous venues, concert halls, and theatres throughout his career, he spent several years at the Barleen Family Theatre in Arizona and Colorado, and most recently at the Bar J Chuckwagon near Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
Donnie appeared uncaring and nonchalant on stage, hardly cracking a smile while playing hot steel guitar licks or fast tunes on the banjo. Donnie’s sister Patty gave him the nickname “Mr. Excitement” many years ago because of his stage persona. Although he may not have wanted the spotlight to shine too brightly on him, he enjoyed being on stage and playing music. Those who saw him perform could sense his love for music and his desire to entertain.
A caring, loving man and friend to all he met, he was always ready to lend a hand or do what was necessary to help those along his way. Donnie will be deeply missed by his family, friends, bandmates, and fans, who have enjoyed his music and friendship over the years.
Donnie will be remembered as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, nephew, cousin, and brother. He is survived by the love of his life, Paula Cook, whom he married in January of 1989. Son Mathew and daughter-in-law Chanda Cook of Wausau, Wisconsin.
