With great sadness, Deb Tewell notes the passing of her husband, Duncan Rollo, after a long and difficult illness. He passed away on December 10, 2021, at their home in Fort Collins, Colorado. Those who knew and admired him, will remember him as a man with strong convictions and for a life path dedicated to conservation and environmental ethics.
Born in Chicago in 1942, Duncan was very proud of his Scottish heritage and was a member of Clan Rollo. He joined the Marine Corps and served in Vietnam with the 1st Recon Battalion. Reflecting on his years in Vietnam, Duncan often said that the sense of peace he experienced looking up through three layers of jungle canopy at night led him to pursue a career path in natural resources once he left the military.
Graduating from California Polytechnic State University (San Luis Obispo) with a B.S. degree in Natural Resources Management, Duncan joined the California State Parks System as a law enforcement ranger at Pismo Beach State Park. Realizing that he could make a greater impact professionally by shifting his focus to natural and cultural history education and interpretation, he went on to work at other California State Parks, in the Nevada State Parks System, and the National Park Service at Redwood National Park and Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, in the field of interpretation.
In a perfect merging of kindred spirits, Duncan met his wife Deb Tewell at an interpretation training course in 1981. Duncan and Deb founded and ran their own interpretive services firm, Interpretive Management Associates, from 1991-2004, offering a range of interpretive services. Duncan and Deb were also life members and founding members of the National Association for Interpretation (NAI) and both were on the organization’s national and regional boards at various times.
No better natural history observation is more appropriate at this time than the observation Duncan’s long-time friend, and director of Cloud Ridge Naturalists, Audrey Benedict, made in this tribute to South African penguins, https://www.cloudridge.org/001-african-penguins/.
Memorial gifts can be made in Duncan’s name to Pathways Hospice in Larimer County or Fort Collins Cat Rescue, where he found his devoted Chyna.
