E Allan was born to Edgar Allan Edwards and Carrie Matilda (Peterson) Edwards and his sister, Virginia, on June 3, 1931 in Alvo, Nebraska. He was born in the heart of the Great Depression and this is where he learned his love of family, friends, fried chicken, sweet corn, and watermelon from his grandparents farm.
Just after his second birthday our father became very sick with pneumonia and other respiratory problems. He spent several years in and out of the hospital, undergoing several surgeries. Then in 1939 his country doctor looked to pre-war Germany for a new “wonder” drug called “Sulfa”, which he used to treat our father. Within 3 weeks he recovered and lived a long healthy life. Many of the doctors who took care of him throughout his life told him that over 90% of kids who had his condition did not live to their 9th birthday, let alone to their 92nd birthday.
Our father and his family moved to Lakewood Colorado in November of 1941. He spent his school years in the Lakewood school system. He always said his high school years were the most carefree and happy go lucky years of his life. He learned one of his life long mantras during those years, “Look for the positives in people and not the negatives”. That’s also were he learned that everyone had unique life skills and you had to nurture those skills in every person.
He met his beautiful wife and our mom, Gloria Lynn (Dow) Edwards, at Lakewood High School in 1949. They were married on August 29, 1953.. They had many wonderful adventures together in the 75 years that followed, including raising three children; Kim, Craig, and Carrie; to love life as much as they did.
He graduated from Lakewood High School in 1950 and from Colorado State University in 1957. Throughout his life he was involved in many organizations and clubs. He was a proud SAE Brother and a Rotarian. He also belonged to several Chamber of Commerces, Bank Board of Directors, Golf Club Board of Directors and advisory boards, and HOA Boards.
He went to work for Holly Sugar in 1957 and spent the next 39 years traveling thought out the west. He started as a field man in Garden City, Kansas, became plant manager in Worland, Wyoming, and finished his career in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He also had stops in La Junta, Grand Junction and Delta, Colorado; Imperial Valley and Brawley, California; Torrington, Wyoming; and Tracy, California. He loved working for Holly Sugar and all the people he met while there.
He rarely sat still. He loved to camp, fish, ski, hunt, skeet shoot, hike, play bridge and other card game and explore country and cities all over the world. His biggest passion was playing golf. He played courses throughout the United States. He made his first and only hole-in-one on hole 8 at Colorado Springs Country Club when he was 81 years old.
Our father is survived by his wife, Gloria, his children: Kim (Doug) DesEnfants, Craig Edwards, and Carrie (Kerry) Mobley. His sister, Virginia Bruns. His grandchildren: Curtis (Stephanie) DesEnfants, Cole (Jaclyn) DesEnfants, Chance Edwards, Cody Edwards, Kollin Mobley, and Kaitlyn Mobley. His great-grandchildren: Joey, Sophie, and Easton. His nephews: Jeff (Stacie), Jay, Chris, and Kirk (Robin).
