She was born on January 18, 1927, in Bowling Green, Kentucky, to William and Edna (O’Shea) Harrod. She loved to say that she was born the 5th of 8 children and was named after her mother. Lucille graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic School, in Bowling Green, and loved to tell the story that as a small child she would help the Catholic nuns with their shopping on Saturday mornings and they would thank her with a candy bar.
Lucille married Scott Thomas Gordon, Sr. on June 13,1944, in Franklin, Kentucky, and together they had 3 children: Scott Thomas, Jr., Cynthia Kay, and Pamela Louise. In 1952 Lucille and Scott made Southern California their home. Lucille and Scott were active members of the Hawthorne Moose Lodge where Lucille held the position of Senior Regent and was a member of the College of Regents. Lucille’s husband, Scott, passed away September 28,1975. On July 23, 1977, Lucille married Frank Paul Simmons. They were married until his death in 1984.
Lucille worked as a crossing guard for the Hawthorne School District. She enjoyed this job and loved interacting with the students. They would make her cards and pictures and invite her to their birthday parties. In 1990, Lucille moved from California to Louisville, Kentucky, with her companion Carmine “Bert” Bertolo (deceased 1999) to be closer to her siblings.
Lucille spent the past 12 months in Colorado at the Aspens at Fort Collins Senior Living Memory Care, where they took great care of her. Her family is very appreciative of the love and care she was given by the wonderful staff at Aspens as well as the staff from Bristol Hospice.
Lucille will be remembered for how much she loved her family and friends. She always had a hug for everyone, was the life of the party (“Good Deal Lucille”), loved cheese enchiladas, Dove dark chocolate, ice-cream sandwiches, Cracker Barrel, word search puzzles, having her picture taken, telling stories (like the bear story), jokes, and singing songs – especially her favorite song, “The Happiest Girl in the Whole USA” by Donna Fargo, which she truly was!!
Lucille is survived by daughters, Cynthia (Dale) Cosby, Pamela Harmon, and daughter in-law Jackie Gordon; Grandchildren: Jerry (Teri) Cosby, Kim (Mike) Applebee, Cheryl (Patrick) Madison, Thomas (Shannon) Gordon, Nicole Boch, Michelle (Ernesto) Garcia; Great-Grandchildren: Kyle (Kayla) and Zack Cosby, Ernie and Stacy Garcia, Rebecca (Liam) Kellogg, Morgan, Ryan, Tanner, Grant, and Brooke Applebee, and Thomas and Joseph Gordon. Lucille was excited to meet 2 great-great granddaughters due to be born this fall (Paisleigh Kellogg and Ofelia Cosby). Lucille is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends, all of whom she loved dearly.
Lucille was preceded in death by her first husband Scott Thomas Gordon Sr; second husband, Frank Paul Simmons; son, Scott Thomas Gordon Jr; her parents and all of her siblings (sisters: Mary Elizabeth “Libba” Haycraft, Margaret “Bobby” Longazel, Louise Brewington, and Anna Ross; brothers: William “Willie” Harrod, Joseph Harrod, and Charles “Ray” Harrod).
