She was born on August 23, 1930 in Chicago to Marius and Clara (née Haaning) Engmark, the middle of five children, and grew up on the city’s northwest side. As a teenager in the 1940s, she volunteered at local missions and as a hospital candy striper, and after graduating from Foreman High School she worked at the W. H. Long Company in the River North neighborhood. During these years she loved driving her red convertible, shopping at the Merchandise Mart, and socializing with her friends at church.
On November 14, 1953, she married Walter John Baumann, whom she had met at a family gathering, in Chicago. In 1956 they moved to the city’s north suburbs, where they had built a house in Riverwoods, the first of several homes in which they raised six children. Somehow they managed to move home and family across the country three times in the 1970s, moving to Fort Collins for the first time in 1973 and eventually settling there for good in 1978.
While raising her large family and working part time, including 30 years at Sears, she still managed to find time for hobbies such as tennis and stained glass. She also loved gardening and was an avid reader, especially of biographies and true crime. In her retirement she volunteered at her church’s food pantry. She was proud of her Danish heritage and loved her collection of Danish porcelain.
Although she conquered scarlet fever at age five, Guillain-Barré syndrome in her fifties, and cancer in her seventies, her earthly body eventually succumbed at the end of a very long life. She was steadfast in her faith in God and looked forward to seeing her loved ones again in heaven. During her last few years, she focused her ministry and purpose in this life on daily prayer for children.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brothers Leroy Engmark and Earl Engmark, her sister Virginia Skaathun, her grandson Taylor Webster, and her granddaughter Tiffany Baumann Nicastle.
She is survived by her sister Clara Anderson; her children Todd (Julie) Baumann, Sally (James) Webster, Holly (Joseph) Greeson, Peggy (Richard) Whiting, Andrew Baumann, and Jennie (Jeff) Stevens; grandchildren Tate Baumann, Jessica (Benjamin) Lundstrom, Cassandra Webster, Emile (Johnny) Ellcey, Benjamin Greeson, Daniel Greeson, Miranda (Anthony) Pisano, Samuel Stevens, Benjamin Stevens, and Isaac Stevens; and great-grandchildren Faith Lundstrom, Tyler Lundstrom, Eli Ellcey, Jack Ellcey, Sam Ellcey, Bennet Ellcey, Claire Ellcey, Kasen Nicastle, and Kamden Nicastle.
