Born at Poudre Valley Hospital in Ft. Collins, he was the second son to the late H. Clint and Norma (Johnson) Shepherd. Hugh graduated from Fort Collins High in 1966 and attended Adams State College graduating in 1970 with a BA in Physical Education/Secondary Education.
Hugh was a teacher and coach for the Poudre School District for 29 years from 1970-1999 with a year abroad in the Netherlands with the Fulbright Teacher Exchange from 1989-1990. He was also an Eagle Scout and still mentoring up until his passing. Hugh was also an Elks Lodge member for 54 years where he was also a Past Exalted Ruler.
Hugh "Coach" enjoyed spending time with friends and family, traveling, cooking, crossword puzzles and Sudoku's.
Surviving are his brother Don (Shirley) Shepherd of Tampa, FL. Daughter Kirsten (Ryan) Smith of Ft. Collins, Co. Nephew Chris Shepherd of Tampa, FL. Granddaughter Emilie Dusdal of Ft. Collins, Co.
A memorial service will be held at Elks Lodge #804 in Ft. Collins, CO at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Elks National Foundation.
