Marshall Carl Petring

Marshall Carl Petring passed away peacefully on July 15, 2021 in Loveland, CO. He was 91 years old.

Marshall was born on April 24, 1930 in Nebraska City, Nebraska to Alfred William and Marian Chloris (Mote) Petring. He had four brothers, Robert Mote, Walter Alfred, James Arthur, and John Frederick. Marshall attended public schools in Nebraska City, Lincoln, and Omaha, Nebraska. He graduated in 1948. After high school, he joined the U.S. Navy, before being drafted, and served in San Diego, California, Memphis, Tennessee, Pensacola, Florida, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and Chincoteague, Virginia. He was an aerial photographer and photographed naval gunnery practice off the coast of Cuba and Puerto Rico for vessels such as the four large battleships USS Missouri (BB63), USS Wisconsin (BB64), USS Iowa (BB61), and USS New Jersey (BB62), and the aircraft carrier USS Tarawa.

After serving in the Navy, Marshall attended the University of Colorado. In 1954, he married Nancy Marie Eckhardt and they continued at CU. Nancy graduated in 1955 and Marshall in 1956. They then moved to Chicago where Nancy taught at Bye Elementary School in Oak Park and Marshall attended graduate school at the University of Chicago. In 1957, they moved to Cleveland, Ohio where Nancy was a teacher in Shaker Heights and Marshall was an assistant administrator at Cleveland City Hospital. In 1961, they moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where Marshall was assistant administrator at Shadyside Hospital. During that time, son Michael and daughter Cynthia were born, respectively, in 1962 and 1963. The family moved to Chicago where Marshall was Assistant Administrator at Northwestern University Passavant Memorial Hospital. In 1965, they moved to Pittsburgh where he was Administrator of Columbia Hospital and then served as the President of the Forbes Health System which included the hospitals of Columbia and Pittsburgh. Sons Brian and Eric were born, respectively, in 1968 and 1970. In 1973, the family moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado where Marshall was Executive Director of Memorial Hospital. In 1977, they moved to Fort Collins, Colorado where Marshall worked for the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals. He surveyed 26 of the 171 Veteran Administration hospitals throughout the U.S. along with many university and small hospitals in rural areas. He retired in 1997 from U.S. Civil Service at Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center after serving for twenty years.

Marshall and Nancy enjoyed 52 years of marriage before Nancy’s death in 2006. In 2009, he was remarried to Elva Brackett Alden, who had been married for 48 years at the time of her husband’s death in 2006. Marshall welcomed Elva’s four children, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren to his family. In total, Marshall cherished two wonderful families of eight children, fifteen grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was so fortunate and ready to continue another life in heaven.

Marshall was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Nancy, and two of his brothers, Robert and Walter. He is survived by his second wife, Elva; children, Michael (wife Monica, daughters Blair and Katie), Cynthia (husband Dave), Brian (daughters Taylor and Emily) and Eric (wife Stacie, daughter Sophie and sons, Turner and Bennett).
