Nellie Jack Burns Walker “Nell”, age 87, passed on peacefully at her home in Loveland on March 22, 2013. Nell was born June 22, 1925 in Carbon, TX, to parents Perry O. and Maude Medford Burns. She lived a wonderful farm life in Okra, TX, growing up with her parents and three sisters: Jeffalee “Jeff”, Bobbie Sue “Bobbie” and Frankie JoAnn “Jo”. All helped in the country store her father had. Her parents and sisters preceded her in death.
Nell graduated from Ranger Jr. College in Texas and eventually moved to Fort Worth, TX. In Fort Worth she was employed at Consolidated Vultee Aircraft where she met her future husband, Charles Ralph Walker, Jr. “Chuck”. They were married in 1951. Chuck preceded her in death on November 24, 2011.
Nell and Chuck’s next move was to the San Diego area in California and Nell’s main ‘profession’ became homemaker and mom. Throughout the years, there were several moves: living in Hingham, Massachusetts; Mobile, Alabama; back to California; back to Mobile and finally in Loveland, CO.
Nell volunteered in many different endeavors: she was a volunteer at a Mobile, AL hospital; as a Loveland Valentine’s Day ‘stamper’; driving for SAINTS; and quite a few more.
Nell and Chuck were the adventurous type and loved people. They traveled in the United States and abroad throughout their lives and gained many friends that way.
Nell (along with Chuck) played bridge, tennis, square danced, went skiing, boating, camping, bicycled and Nell was a very good cook and seamstress. Nell was fun loving and was known for that twinkle in her eye. She was devoted to helping Chuck in his various interests, especially his trumpet playing, attending many, many music concerts.
Also important to Nell were the family vacations to visit her family in Texas and to the Walker family cabin outside of Gunnison, CO. She cooked up some of the best panfried fresh caught trout. Nell and Chuck were also active in church, wherever they lived.
She was a real ‘trooper’ especially in the last eight years of her life on earth, still laughing and smiling and teasing and enjoying the wheelchair ‘dancing’ in her home.
Nell is survived by her children: John S. (Suellen) of Boulder, CO, Candy of Fort Collins, CO, Brad (Trudy) of Rixeyville, VA; five grandchildren, Gabriel (Amy), Johnnie Hart, Claire, Ian, and August; and many nieces and nephews.
Nell was and is loved by many and will be greatly missed, but oh, the welcoming home and the union with Chuck and family and friends who have preceded her to her heavenly home.
To all who lovingly took care of Nell in her home and to all her friends who stopped by to be with her in her last 8 years, the family thanks you. And also thank you for the flowers and expressions of love during our time of bereavement.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 27th at the First Congregational Church in Loveland. Graveside Services to be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 28th at the Gunnison Cemetery in Gunnison, CO. Memorial contributions can be made to the charity of your choice in care of Resthaven Funeral Home, 8426 S Hwy 287, Fort Collins, CO 80525.
