He was born on January 10, 1940, and throughout his life he carried himself with quiet strength, steady purpose, and deep devotion to the people he loved.
Dr. Hanawalt proudly served in the United States Navy, a commitment that reflected the values he lived by—honor, responsibility, and service. After his military years, he dedicated his life to helping others as a respected oral surgeon. He brought skill, care, and professionalism to his work, and those who knew him understood that his dedication came from a genuine desire to make a difference. Even in retirement, the life he built and the people he helped remained part of his enduring legacy.
More than anything, Dr. Hanawalt had a lifelong love for flying. He was fascinated by aviation in all its forms—from World War II aircraft like B-51s to the simple, breathtaking freedom of being in the sky himself. He flew his own plane whenever he could, always drawn to the peace and joy he felt above the ground. For him, flying wasn’t just a hobby—it was where his spirit felt most at home.
Dr. Hanawalt will be remembered not only for what he accomplished, but for who he was: a man of integrity, devotion, and quiet passion. His love for his family was constant, and his presence will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Jo Hanawalt; his daughter, Jody Brannaman; his son, Jeff Emerine; and his two granddaughters, Anna Brannaman and Megan McDaniel.
A memorial service will be held on January 29, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Allnutt Funeral Home.
