Devoted wife, beloved mother, and valued friend, Doris Louise Moore died on December 30th, 2017, just shy of her 92nd birthday, as a result of complications from dementia. Her three daughters, Annette, Lorraine, and Roxane, 7 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren survive her. Doris was born January 6, 1926 in Los Angeles, California. Raised by her late parents Connie and Arthur Munyon, Doris’ early years were spent on the farm in Coachella Valley. Doris’ love for water began at the young age of three when she taught herself to swim in the family’s backyard pond. Later when her family would move to Downey, CA, continuing her love for the water, Doris would bus herself to the closest Los Angeles county swimming pool for practice. Doris’ high school summer vacations were spent on Catalina Island. Here, she enjoyed swimming out to greet the incoming boats as the passengers on board tossed her coins. These coins were happily collected and placed in her bathing cap for safekeeping. Based on her love of water, Doris and one of her lifetime friends were one of the few synchronized swimmers whom made the final cut to swim with Esther Williams in the movie Bathing Beauties. Doris’ swimming talents continued to progress until the war broke out; it was then she opted to work at the local post office rather than go to the Olympics. As Doris made her journey towards her final resting place, she fought to live life as she always had-thinking of others, giving smiles, and showing kindness, grace, and gratitude towards all those around her. She never stopped seeking adventures, even if it were only a quick drive around town. Doris will be remembered as someone who loved people and their stories, as she always loved to learn about people’s lives. She made friends easily, trusted everyone, and forgave without expectations. We will miss her infectious smile, warm friendship, and deep love. Doris will be buried alongside her late husband, Captain Robert L. Moore, at Riverside National Cemetery on Wednesday, January 10th, 2018 at 1:01 P.M.
