

José Lozano was born to José Lozano Vasquez and Maria Dolores Eugenia Lozano Torres, musician and homemaker in Los Angeles, on November 27, 1957. José passed on November 21, 2025, in Fullerton, CA. He is now "Puro Party'ing" in heaven with all our loved ones.
José was raised in Ciudad Juarez Chihuahua, Mexico and Southern, CA. He emerged in the arts community at a very early age which was his lifelong love.
José has a rich history of drawing, painting, printmaking, curation, writing, and illustration. He attended the Arts Center College of Design and received his Master’s of Fine Arts (MFA) from Cal State University, Fullerton in 1987, where he studied with Kim Abeles, Pierre Picot, and Leo Robinson. He participated in and curated numerous exhibitions in Los Angeles, and Orange County, including Papel Chicano, and Chicanitas; Works on Paper from the Cheech Marin Collection and Open your Eyes/Abre los Ojos at Fullerton's Muckenthaler Cultural Center. He has worked on serigraph atelier projects with Self-Help Graphics, and several of the prints completed there are in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art permanent collection. Jose is the recipient of the California Community Foundation Fellowship for drawing and painting, and his public art projects include LA Metro Loteria at the La Brea / Jefferson station and Aliso Dreams, a mural for La Plaza de Cultura y las Artes at La Plaza Village in Downtown Los Angeles, among others. His most recent children's book, "Little Chanclas" was named Best Bilingual Picture Book by the Latino Book Awards Association and well-reviewed by the New York Times. In 2025, Craig Krull Gallery presented "House of Mirth", a solo exhibition of José Lozano's drawings, prints, and paintings.
José also taught special education and art classes for the Anaheim School District, City of Santa Ana, Otis Art Institute, various non-profit organizations like the Plaza de la Raza Inc, Heart Project/Artworx, LA Commons and others.
José is survived by his aunt Graciela Isaccs; siblings, Alicia Lozano-Garcia, Fernando Lozano, Javier Lozano and cousins Maria Carrillo and Amelia Toralba, who were like sisters and his dear partner, Gloria Enedina Alvarez. In addition, numerous nephews/grand nephews, and nieces/grand nieces, Ileana, Christoffer, Christian, Madeline, Amelia, Vanessa, Lynnette, Anderson, and Emmerson. Also, very special friends, colleagues, and artists whom he admired, respected and loved.
• Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, 400 W. Commonwealth Ave., Fullerton, CA 92832 on Monday, December 22, 2025, at 10:30 AM.
• Jose’s life celebration reception will follow at the Fullerton Museum Center, 301 N. Pomona Ave., Fullerton, CA 92832 from 12:00 to 3:00 PM.
