Sarah Anna Sloan was born on Valentine's Day 1924 in Sioux City, Iowa, to John Ralph Sloan Sr. and Bessie Marie Bryan Sloan. At the time of her birth, her father was a banker and her mother a school teacher, who also played the piano in silent movie theaters. At age 11, Sally's family moved to Primghar, Iowa. Mom, Dad, and older brother, Jack, moved into the home we knew as our Grandparent's home. Sally's father bought the Ford Motor Company in Primghar. During her youth, the Sloan family worked together and survived the conditions of the Depression. Sally graduated from Primghar High School in 1941. Sally was actively involved in high school activities, including: Class President, Band, Glee Club, Annual Staff, Debate Club, & Cheerleading. She then enrolled at the University of South Dakota in 1942, earning a B.S. in Sociology (1945). While at USD, Sally met her husband of 68 years, James (Jim) Nickolas Berbos. In 1964, the Berbos family moved to Minneapolis as Dr. Jim began his residency in Ophthalmology at the U of Minnesota. Upon completion of this residency, the Berbos family moved to Fullerton CA where Jim opened his Ophthalmology practice. Sally was an essential behind-the-scenes-worker ensuring the continued success of her husband's medical practice.
