Alexander Blok was born on May 9th, 1945 in Leningrad, Soviet Union (now St. Petersburg, Russia) to late Asya Blok and Semyon Blok. Incredibly, he was born at the exact same happy moment when the official end of World War II was announced on the radio. In 1963, Alexander enrolled in the Leningrad State University of Telecommunications (now St. Petersburg SUT). He then obtained a PhD in physics at 29 and then stayed on as the member of the faculty, conducting research in optical communications and teaching undergraduate classes. Overall, Alexander spent 31 years with the University. He was a vibrant part of the University’s community and made many lifelong friends while there. The University is also where he met Elena - the love of his life and wife for the next 42 years. Together, they had one daughter, Maria.
In 1994, Alexander immigrated to the United States with his family and settled in Pikesville, MD, first taking a job an insurance agent and then eventually retiring.
Alexander was a vivid collector all his life. He had a vast knowledge on many topics such as history, literature, arts, sports and collectables. He took pleasure in spending time with his family and spoiling his two grandsons.
Alexander was a very strong person, never complaining throughout his many health battles and difficulties. He also possessed a great sense of humor that did not leave him until his last days. Even on a day before his passing, with almost all of his strength leavening him, Alexander was still joking with his family and nurses, staying true to his humorous nature. His sense of humor, wit, care, love and friendship will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 16, 2021 from 11:00AM to 12:00PM at DeVol Funeral Home, 10 East Deer Park Drive, Gaithersburg, MD 20877; followed by a burial at Garden of Remembrance Memorial Park, at 14321 Comus Rd, Clarksburg, MD 20871, and then a small gathering at his daughter’s residence.
