I will always treasure the times spent with Wayne and the whole team in the Sacristy every Sunday. Wayne taught me to look forward to the early mornings at St. C’s, as a time of learning, reflection, faith, celebration, and joy in community. Through his gentle guidance and teaching, I learned so many lessons about practicing spirituality both in church and in life (and also how to fold the linens just right, or remember the symbols embroidered on the pall). He would always answer my questions so thoroughly and he would smile and laugh with us in our many shenanigans behind the scenes (we gave him the title of Wayne the Wisdom Wizard)! He was our rock in the sacristy and will forever remain a legend to look up to and learn from. I am praying for Wayne, that he is at peace and is witnessing his far-reaching impact on the communities he has touched so deeply. Many prayers to his family, friends, and communities as well. We love you Wayne!

Whenever I think of A. Wayne, the words "true gentleman" come to mind. He and his dear wife, Anona, were always a welcome presence in our home every Thanksgiving. He will be truly missed. Love, Cheri Bonifant

As a member of the Altar Guild and a Lay Eucharistic Minister at St. Columba's, I got my education in all things related to worship and the Sacristy from Wayne.  I've always been in awe of his knowledge of rituals in the Episcopal Church and all the fascinating history of St. Columba's.  Neither Wayne nor I were cradle Episcopalians, but one would never suspect that about him.  He periodically held sessions for the Altar Guild in which he would explain the symbols on our beautiful linens and the history behind each of the silver chalices, as well as the significance of all the elements of our worship.  He was a stickler for details and doing the little things correctly--but that was what made our worship flow so seamlessly.  I've always treasured my friendship with both Wayne and Anona.  they have been my role models as people whose faith informed their everyday lives.  Wayne was a true gentleman and a good and faithful servant.

I served as a Sacristan under Wayne's guidance at St. Columba's for many years. I couldn't have asked for a better spiritual mentor and guide to the complexities of both spiritual and secular life. I always cherished stopping back to the sacristy in the years after and reconnecting with Wayne. My heartfelt condolences to his family, he was a wonderful man.

Comment: Memories of my brother, Wayne, are vast and special. Growing up in Live Oak, FL, in our family of four with our parents, Aubrey and Lucile Fowler, shaped our lives in a good way.  My brother always looked out for me.  I matured a better person    having  Wayne's influence. For over 79 years I had that "one of a kind" brother here on earth.  I still do. Memories  last forever. I remember sharing with Wayne the fact that we both had a stint working on the Hill. But I will surely not be alone in especially remembering him when I signed up to become a Lay Eucharist Minister. His steely warning look was one that makes John Guenther's look like a grin. His was one of my favorite dependable sights when arriving at St. Columba's--an astute man of principle who loved what he did and the people he did it for.  Elsa Skaggs

I remember the gentlest of souls, whose son and I would spot during televised joint sessions of Congress, who would pick up his son from Philly for holiday breaks and always offer to drop me at the airport on their way back to DC, even though it wasn’t exactly on the way, who loved telling stories of his life, his kids’ lives, and his career in the Capitol, who adored his wife, who had a moral center as strong as an oak, who delighted in so many things in this world.

I am blessed by the friendship I had with Wayne. He was also a mentor and teacher as we worked together at St Columba's, and not just to me, but many youth as well. Wayne was serious about liturgy and did his job well. I loved to see him teaching the sacristans and a few clergy along the way.  I will always remember and treasure visiting Wayne and Anona at their house, having lunch or tea and hearing their stories. Their faith and love for each other were and are inspiring. Wayne had a great laugh, a warm smile and a kindness and gentleness about him. He loved his work and worked hard at it, at the cathedral and at St C's.  Well done, good and faithful servant!
