April 7, 1941 – December 20, 2021
Charles E. O’Connell passed away peacefully on December 20, 2021, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Patricia, and their devoted sons, Matthew (Kristin), Brian (Dede) and Andrew (Char) and five grandchildren of whom he was so proud, Shane, Erin, Liliana, Graham and Harrison. He is also survived by his sister, Joan Kane (James). He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles, Sr. and Teresa.
Chuck was raised on Rugby Ave. in Bethesda and graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes, Archbishop Carroll High School, St. Bernard College (AL) and Georgetown Law School. He was a trial attorney for the U.S. Depts. of Interior and Justice, serving the Federal Government for over 41 years. Chuck was a CYO basketball coach, an avid Redskins fan, and outdoor chef, who enjoyed grilling chicken for anyone who had enough patience to wait for it.
In addition to his family, Chuck loved his friends, both old and new, playing golf, watching sports, reading by the fire, and sharing a good laugh. A true master of storytelling, he used comedic timing, irony, and self-deprecation to make all around him laugh until they were breathless. He will be sorely missed.
Friends and family will be received at Our Lady of Lourdes, 7500 Pearl St., Bethesda, on Friday, January 7, at 9:00 a.m., with a funeral mass to follow at 10:00AM
In lieu of flowers, you may consider an honorary donation to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
