It is with deepest sorrow we announce that on Thursday, September 17, 2020 Daniel Joseph Pohl of Darnestown, Maryland, passed away at 61 years of age. Dan was the beloved husband of Julie Anne Pohl for 32 years and the devoted father of Katherine (Katie) Anne Pohl, Claire Elizabeth Pohl, and Emily Louise Pohl. He will be best remembered by his loved ones for his contagious sense of humor, hard working nature, generosity, and as an incredibly caring and selfless father, husband, brother, son, uncle, and friend.
Dan was born on May 16, 1959 in Darby, PA and raised in Lancaster, PA by the late Nora Ann Pohl (Maguire) and Charles Edward Pohl, M.D. He attended Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, PA and graduated from Tulane University in New Orleans, LA where he was a proud member of his fraternity, Kappa Sigma.
After graduating from Tulane, Dan pursued his passion for cutting-edge technology by bringing his innovative and imaginative spirit to a series of roles and personal ventures. At Lotus Development Co., he held a number of management positions in business development, sales, and product management and marketing. Dan then moved to IBM where he served as the Director of Internet Strategies and Services. Between working at IBM and Danya, where he later filled the role of Vice President of Information Technology Services and Solutions, Dan founded three pioneering, internet-related companies. After working at Danya, Dan founded NextGen New Media, a digital and new media company where he acted as the Managing Director for 12 years. Dan was highly original and inventive, and he continuously brought his trailblazing ideas and passion projects to fruition, creating and managing unique phone applications such as “flARe!”—an augmented reality (AR) location tracking platform.
Outside of work, Dan was an avid and lifelong tennis player and devoted sports fan. In addition to cheering on the Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Capitals, Baltimore Orioles, and the Tulane Green Wave, Dan also loved following his daughters’ college teams whose apparel was well-represented in his wardrobe. He constantly supported his daughters and took great pride in their respective accomplishments at Emory, UCLA, University of Miami, Georgetown University, and Notre Dame. Dan had an infectious enthusiasm for holidays. He was the king of fireworks every Fourth of July, a pumpkin and apple picking expert, and an infamous Christmas tree inspector. Dan was always there for his family and friends, offering spot on advice and unconditional love and support.
Dan is survived by his four siblings and their families. He was the dear brother of Charles Edward Pohl II (Joan), Edward Franklin Pohl (Joanne), Michael James Pohl (Kerry) and Marie Michelle “Mimi” Mackey (James) and the cherished uncle to eleven nieces and nephews including Charles Edward Pohl III, M.D., Michael William Pohl, James Christoper Pohl, and Caroline Francis Pohl; Margaret Anne Pohl, Charles Edward Pohl IV, and Hugh Patrick Pohl; Alexandra Elizabeth Pohl and James Michael Pohl; and Sarah Marie Mackey and Brigid Katherine Mackey.
Services will be held on Saturday, September 26th, 2020 at Our Lady of Mercy Church (9200 Kentsdale Dr, Potomac, MD 20854). Visitation will be offered at 12PM EST followed by Mass at 1PM EST. The interment will be private. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, guests permitted in the church will be limited to 150 persons.
