

He was born in Monongahela, Pa on June 25, 1936, son of the late Horace Neal and Vera Jane Neal. He went on to graduate from South Huntington High School, Class of 1954 and enrolled at Pennsylvania State University, where he graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. Not long after graduation he met his loving wife, Helen Smiy, originally from Jeannette, PA, and they married in 1959. Soon after a son, Gary Neal came along in 1960 and later another son, Robert Neal was born in 1963.
He worked several jobs throughout his engineering career including for the Raytheon Company in Boston, Massachusetts, EG&G in Rockville, Maryland as well as Northrop Grumman in Northern Virginia. He also started his own company, Neal Research Associates. He loved learning, especially Mathematics which applied to his work in Sonar Signal Processing. He earned a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from George Washington University. In addition he also taught several short courses in Sonar Signal Processing nationally as well as internationally through George Washington University. He also taught several graduate level courses in electrical engineering through George Washington.
He loved learning and specifically studying and applying solutions via the use of Mathematics. You could often find him in the basement of his home in the evenings and on weekends researching scientific books or working through different equations. In addition to his scientific work, he enjoyed spending time with his brothers and sister as well as enjoying the occasional youth baseball game involving his grandson. He also never missed a televised Penn State football game.
He is survived by his loving wife, Helen Smiy Neal, his sister, Priscilla Neal of Madison, PA, two brothers, Earl Neal and his wife, Donna, of Madison PA, and Donald Neal and his wife, Sharon of Melbourne, FL; two sons, Gary Neal and his wife, Sheila of Cudjoe Key, FL, and Robert Neal and his wife, Andrea of Virginia Beach, VA; two grandchildren, Amber Neal and Matthew Neal, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at Church of the Ascension, 205 South Summit Ave, Gaithersburg, MD on Wednesday, October 12, 2022 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. with a service immediately following. There will be an additional service at Beatty-Rich Funeral Home, Route 136, Madison, PA on Saturday, October 15, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Westmoreland County Memorial Park Cemetery, Hempfield Township.
