

George William Walsh died on September 18, 2024 in Washington, D.C. after a short illness. He was 93 years old. His wife, Joan, died four days later, on September 22, at the age of 97, after 63 years of marriage. He is survived by his children Grail Sipes (husband Christopher Sipes) and Simon Walsh (wife Jane Walsh), and his grandchildren Mahon Walsh, Declan Walsh, Daniel Sipes and Amelia Sipes. He loved family, a good suit and his beloved Celtics and Red Sox.
Born in 1931 in midtown Manhattan, George Walsh graduated from Fordham University and Columbia’s Journalism School and served in Korea and Japan as an Army cryptographer. In the 1970s, he was editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine and editor-in-chief of Macmillan's General Books Division, and published the Civil War classic “The Killer Angels,” which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1975. He was the author of five books: two on New York crime and politics, “Gentleman Jimmy Walker” and “Public Enemies;” and a trilogy on the Civil War, "Damage Them All You Can," "Whip the Rebellion," and "Those Damn Horse Soldiers." George was a beloved husband and father, steadfast and uncompromising with himself, loving and supportive to his wife, children and grandchildren. He will walk beside us always.
Funeral services will be held at Holy Trinity in Washington, D.C. on Nov. 18 at 10:30 am.
