Isatu Turay-Thoronka was born in Freetown – Sierra Leone on November 1, 1959 to the late Pa Sebbe Turay (father) and the late Yeanor Conteh (mother). She was one of seven siblings, all of whom preceded her in death. She grew up in Murray Town, Freetown – Sierra Leone. She attended Murray Town Primary School, and then later, the Richard Allen Secondary School. Following which she went on to work for the Bible Language Translation Institute in Mudge Farm, Murray Town. She then met the love of her life, the late Mr. Eric W. Attakumah, and were blessed with two daughters, Lucinda and Virginia.
Isatu emigrated to the United States of America in 1990. She later got married to the late Mr. Sahid Thoronka and in 1997 emigrated both her daughters to the United States of America. In 1997, she was employed by Costco Wholesale in their Gaithersburg store, where she was able to reach the status of Supervisor of their electronic and sales department. She worked hard and diligently and was the employee of the year in 2007. She worked tirelessly as Supervisor until her health prevented her services. She was loved by her co-workers because she was kind and generous to everyone who came her way. She was an active member of the House of Prayer Evangelistic Ministries, Gaithersburg since 2011 till present, where she was also a member of the church leadership. She loved working in the church and cherished doing the Lord’s work. Her dream was to attend bible school and be able to evangelize to others.
She loved spending time with her family and loved ones, laughing and always wearing a smile on her face. She also loved to travel. She was a loving and caring person who would lend a helping hand to anyone without thinking twice about it. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and friend; always thinking of others first. Her generosity and kindness were unparalleled. She was a straight shooter, and as quick as she was to tell you how she really felt without mincing words, she was also twice as quick to forgive and forget. To know her was to love her.
Isatu had a two-year battle with a debilitating terminal illness which she bravely and gallantly fought. But on August 1, 2021 she finally succumbed and passed away peacefully.
