Jorge Manuel Duarte Leiva

After a brief illness, Jorge Manuel Duarte, age 87, went home to the Lord on November 8, 2023, at his home in Montgomery Village, Maryland. He is the beloved husband of Luisa Duarte, loving father of Cecilia Duarte Ross (Larry), Nelia Duarte, and Carlos Duarte. He is the adored grandfather of Alejandra Maria Tyma and Maria Luisa Tyma. He is also survived by his younger brother, Luis Mateo Duarte, many cousins, and several nieces and nephews.

Jorge was born on July 27, 1936, in Havana, Cuba, to the late Jose Manuel Duarte and Domitila Cecilia Leiva. An excellent student, he studied accounting at La Universidad de Villanueva in Havana, Cuba..Following graduation, Jorge worked at various organizations in Havana, Cuba before emigrating to the United States in 1961. Once in the US, he secured a job at the World Bank in Washington, DC. Shortly after arriving in DC, he met Luisa Estupinan, the love of his life. They married on November 26, 1966. They established their family in Rockville, Maryland and welcomed three children as well as sharing their home with grandparents and uncle.

He will be remembered for his love of his God, his love for his family, and his quiet and calm demeanor. His skilled leadership and contributions to church community groups such as the Knights of Columbus, the Arimetheans, and the Spanish Community as a lector, a sacristan, and as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist are part of his legacy. He will also be remembered for his active involvement in the lives of his precious granddaughters, Alejandra and Maria.

The family will receive friends on Monday, November 13, 2023 from 6-8 PM at Saint Raphael’s Catholic Church, 1513 Dunster Rd, Rockville, MD 20854

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at 10:15 AM., at Saint Raphael’s Catholic Church .Interment will take place at Gate of Heaven Cemetery with a reception at St Raphael’s to follow.
