Born on February 23, 1965, in Rockville, Maryland, Joe was the beloved son of Margaret Griffin, and his father, who preceded him in death George Griffin. He is survived by brothers George (Linda) and Robert (Elizabeth), sisters Martie and Mary Pat Gleason (Joseph).
He was a devoted father who loved his children fiercely. He is survived by his loving children Michael and Grace Griffin. He was preceded in death by his oldest son, Patrick Griffin, who lost his brave battle with cancer on May 10, 2025. In addition to the numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, Joe has a multitude of close friends, associates and former classmates that he considered family as well.
Joe dedicated over 30 years to public service with the State of Maryland, most recently serving as the Register of Wills for Montgomery County to which he was elected 7 times. Joseph had a deep love for his work and especially for the team of colleagues with whom he served. He had a rare gift for making everybody feel valued and welcome. Through his leadership, humor, and kindness, he created a space where hard work was matched with joy and where friendship flourished. Some of his most cherished moments were spent making his office holiday cards and spending time at the MACO conference every August in Ocean City, Maryland.
He was deeply committed to his community and his Catholic faith, volunteering as a lector, serving on the finance council, and helping with the youth group at St. Peter’s Parish in Olney.
Joe loved sports—especially cheering on the Baltimore Orioles—and he valued health and wellness, often spending time going for runs or long walks. He never took life too seriously, yet faced even the hardest times with incredible strength. Over a ten-year battle with illness, he showed unwavering courage and grace, never once giving up.
He was the light in every room—joyful, compassionate, and full of life. He cared deeply for others, and his humor, warmth, and sharp wit left a lasting impact on everyone he met. Above all, Joe was a family man. His love for his family was the center of his life.
Joe’s legacy is one of faith, strength, and love. He will be missed beyond measure.
