Joe was born in the era associated with our finest generation and he embodied all its best traits. He was a proud patriot, a Veteran of WWII and the Korean War, and an IBM and NEA executive, but above all a devoted family man.
He is survived by his beloved wife Agnes, children Jay (Laurie), John (Theresa), Kathy (Kim) Park, Debbie (Jay) Watkins and Randy (Tammie) Connellee, and sister Gerchan Armistead. He left 13 grandchildren, Jason, Kellie, Julie, Sarah, Luke, Erin, Jake, Joey, Tatiana, Ashley, Ryan, MacKenzie, and Kyle; and 3 great-grandchildren, Harper, Sawyer, and Jackson.
He is predeceased by his first wife Patricia Keefe and his sister Nancy.
Born Oct 6, 1927 in Fall River, Massachusetts, Joe received an undergraduate degree from Norwich University and a Master’s degree from Columbia University. He joined the Army upon high school graduation during WW II and after college graduation served as an Electrical Engineer for the Air Force in Los Alamos, New Mexico in the country’s emerging nuclear program.
Joe was an Executive with IBM Research and was intricately involved in the IBM Anti-Trust lawsuit. This invariably took him around the world in support of this effort. He developed and patented STAIRS, the information system that IBM used to successfully defend against the lawsuit. He was a successful executive in a career that spanned 50+ years.
Joe enjoyed golf, bridge, chess, and had a true love of learning. He and Agnes spent most mornings with his coffee klatch, discussing current events, memories and experiences.
He was most proud however of his family and everything they did and was always there through good times and bad. He reveled in everybody’s good times, and always made the bad times better.
He will be greatly missed by all.
