Julia Elaine Huey (“Elaine”) passed out of this world on April 5 from the result of a broken hip and a decline in health. She was ninety years old. Born in Washington, DC, Elaine had been a resident of Montgomery County for fifty-five years, primarily in Germantown MD and for the last nine years in senior living centers in Gaithersburg and then Rockville.
Part of her youth was lived in Montgomery, Alabama. In 1952 she matriculated at Auburn University. She graduated June 2, 1956, with a B.S. degree in Chemistry. Her primary employment was with the Gillette Corporation in the Maryland area where she conducted product tests on razors and shaving devices. For a period of time, she owned a horse named Blackjack. She loved riding him and said it was the best exercise she ever had. When Gillette shut down work in MD, she really got involved in volunteer work. She was on the Board of the Germantown Citizens Association from 1985-1990, and on the Board of the Germantown Historical Society from 1990 (a founding member) to 2020, and on the Advisory Board of the James and Macie King Dairy Mooseum from 2001 to 2023. She was instrumental in saving the James KIng Barn from demolition and helped raise funds to create the Mooseum. A very special milestone for Elaine was being awarded the 1994 Citizen of the Year Award “In Recognition of Outstanding Service to Germantown” by the Germantown Alliance.
Elaine was known for her wit, her love of friends and neighbors, her simple faith in God (the best kind!) and especially for her love of family. People always seemed to enjoy her company and conversation. For years she attended the Neelsville Presbyterian Church in Germantown and was a part of the Stephen Ministry. When she moved to Gaithersburg she attended Grace United Methodist Church.
While Elaine never married, she was deeply devoted to family and to valu ed friends. Her parents moved to Bethesda MD in 1965. Her father, Robert Monroe Huey, passed in 1971 and her mother passed in 1987 at the age of ninety. Elaine was predeceased by her brother, Robert Moore Huey on Jan 25, 2014, and her sister, Jean Robinson Thott, who died in 2023 two months short of her 99th birthday. She is survived by three nephews and one niece: John C Robinson from Frisco, TX; Charlie H Robinson from Wyckoff, NJ; Robert T Huey from Detroit Metro, MI and Susan J Robinson from Roslindale, MA. Her long-time friends include Elaine and Leo Schneider, close-by neighbors from Germantown, MD and Kathie Hulley from York PA.
Elaine’s Celebration of Life will be held on Friday April 25, 2025 at Parklawn Memorial Park, 12800 Veirs Mill Rd, Rockville, MD 20853 from 11:00 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. The ceremony will be held at the graveside. There will be chairs set out for guests; However, this will require all that are able to walk up a hill - Elaine’s gravesite is next to her parents’ resting place and is on a hilltop. This is not insurmountable, but it will help to have appropriate footwear. Let’s pray for good weather!
