Marc served the Montgomery County government for 37 years, including for 12 years as the County Attorney. He loved his work and his colleagues.
Born in Kankakee, Illinois in 1946 to Leroy and Phyllis Hansen, Marc grew up loving ancient history and “mentoring” his younger brother, Stephen. He graduated from MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois, where he met his best friend and beloved wife of 54 years, Peggy Hansen.
Marc earned a master’s degree in teaching from Washington University in St. Louis, where he taught high school history for several years before moving to Washington Grove, Maryland. After earning a J.D. from American University, Marc practiced law at a firm in Rockville before joining the Office of the County Attorney.
Active in his community, Marc served as the Mayor of Washington Grove. He also served on the Washington Grove Board of Zoning Appeals, and on the Board of Trustees of Washington Grove United Methodist Church. He maintained his love of teaching and mentorship throughout his life, teaching a course in local government at the George Washington University School of Law for many years.
Beloved by family, friends, and colleagues, Marc is survived by his wife, Peggy; his children, Christine Wellons and Stephen Hansen; his children-in-law, Paul Wellons and Becca Hansen; his brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Julie Hansen; and his cherished grandchildren, Aidan Hansen, and Julia and Luke Wellons.
