I had difficulty writing this. Not because I couldn’t find the words; I had too much to say. I was trying to say who she was to the world.  But you all have your own Impressions on that.  So, I decided to say what my mom means to me.
First and foremost, she was my Mother. She was loving, understanding, strict, no-nonsense, fun loving, fiercely protective and proud of her family.  She loved us each for who we were. As we grew, we were given the opportunity to find ourselves, to make mistakes, and to occasionally fall.  She allowed us time to fall apart, then  she helped us get on our feet again and get on with it.  And she was known to give us a swift kick in the ass when we needed it.
Mom was my first teacher.  She taught me Family is everything. Her favorite time of life was raising her children.  And she relived that with grandchildren, great grandchildren, and any friend or family that needed to learn just what a family could be. She taught me what it means to be strong-to stand up for yourself, and others. Its ok to fall apart, but then pull yourself together and get through it!  And of course, she taught me to love words and the books written with them.  When I was young, we would play the dictionary game.  Open a dictionary to a random page- and try to find a word the other didn’t know. She would go through the root of the word, prefixes, suffixes, part of speech, and spelling to explain how she was coming up with the meaning.  I didn’t find a word she didn’t know until recently. She tried to teach me how to break the occasional rule, but that was a lesson I struggled with. I did finally be able to break a rule for you Mom!
Mom was my book partner. I didn’t need a book club- I had mom. We would read- and reread the same book.  We would discuss books, lessons found in the book, plots, subplots, character traits and how a character changed throughout the story and writing styles. For our favorite books, we would still be discussing it years later!
Mom was a big part of my support network. Any time I needed her, she was there. From a phone call to assure me I was doing the right thing, to dropping her car off at my house because ‘there was no parking’ so I could run errands while she was at work.  Mom would drop off a ham that was in her freezer and needed used up when I was short on grocery money.  She would comfort me when I feel apart, then pick me up and put me back on my feet so I could face another day.
Mom was a mentor and editor in chief.  There wasn’t a letter, a report, or any writing that she didn’t read over and correct. She edited any writing I did from the time I was in grade school to just recently.  She steered me in the right direction whenever I needed advise.  In fact, while living with me, Judy and I would be discussing HOA stuff and she was right in on the discussion, often times offering the solution to a problem.
Most of all, Mom was a friend and role model.  The biggest compliment I can receive is “your just like your mother!”  Mom- I love you, and you will always be a part of me.

Mom was generous and gracious in spirit and body.
She excelled in embracing others into the family just when THEY and WE needed it the most.
Some of my closest friends and companions are family because of this trait and I will be forever grateful.

She would find fun and humor in ordinary things and raised her children to appreciate simple pleasures in life. For her young children, every Sunday afternoon was fun day, usually a drive to a distant park or wild place for picnics and exploring and laughter. She loved the outdoors and nature. Mom even made sure that Timothy the turtle was returned to the woods before the cold of fall arrived.

Mom was also fierce in her opposition to  meanness, racism and bigotry.
When misguided people would use slurs to disparage a group, mom would claim inclusion in that very group. In my adolescence I once asked how we could be part black, hispanic, polish and Jewish all at once - Mom explained, it is a big world.

I truly believe my mother impacted many people in her life. She was from a big family and she had a big family. She had a diverse circle of friends, coworkers, and neighbors. I think she learned something from everybody and passed on the good stuff to all who were responsive. She showed love and compassion to many. I have so many fond memories of Uncle Bud and Aunt Gret.  I enjoyed chatting with her over a few glasses of wine.  She was kind and supportive, full of life, laughter, and deep - down love!  They both will missed but never forgotten.  Sending my love and hugs to the family❤️🫂

Ohhhh, Aunt Gret, what an impact your life had on so many of us! Some of my best childhood and adult memories are of the many family reunions and vacations I spent at your home. You and Uncle Bud were for sure the life of the events! To my cousins….. although we cannot be there in person, please know you are in our thoughts and prayers. Much love to you all. Bud and Gretchen are together and will both always be a big part of my memories especially my younger days They always looked out for me and taught me alot along the way, the stories are endless and so are the smiles on my face when I think back.

Being the baby of 5 kids, the memories are so overwhelming. I just know that we all had the best childhood in the world. Thank you mom for every leson learned, laughing at stupid stuff, singing all the time and teaching us all how to love not only our siblings but everyone that ever entered our lives. We would not be the loving people we are today without you. Rest now and we will laugh together again. ❤️
