fifty years. She was a cherished wife, mother, sister, and grandmother. She is survived by her adoring
husband John, her loving children Justin & Liana, Bart & Marcia, Nina & Edwin, and her admiring
grandchildren Maia, Sephora, Satya, Adam, Bella, and Briar, her sisters Alma, Linda and brother Chris.
Mary was born in Long Eddy, New York in the Catskill Mountains on September 22nd, 1944. She was
raised by Henry and Alma Doyle along with her sisters Alma and Linda and her brothers John and Chris.
She was first introduced to the joys of serving the community by working in her father’s local general
store and the regional Catholic church in which her mother was a matriarch. This small-town upbringing
taught her the importance of family, community, and faith and was instrumental in shaping her unique
ability to unassumingly inspire those around her to strive for honorable living.
Mary met her loving husband John in the Adirondacks in the town of Indian Lake, New York in 1972, and
in 1975 they were wed on a sailing vessel in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. These two events served as
the cornerstone for an illustrious career, thriving family network, and resilient community coalition.
Mary always had a passion for academics and earned a B.A. from St. Bonaventure and an M.S.W. from
Fordham. She became a licensed clinical social worker and was awarded an honorary PhD. from the
Clinical Social Work Institute Inc.
Mary was dedicated to the field of mental health, in which she made many significant and
groundbreaking contributions. She was instrumental in the growth of getting academic recognition for
social work education nationally and internationally. She excelled at natural leadership yet shied from
the spotlight of credit for the success of her groups. In addition to running a very successful private
practice since 1975, Mary has worked in clinical settings in New York City and has held prominent
positions at Georgetown University including the Consultant to the Office of The President.
Mary was a founder and chair of the Task Force for the Establishment of the Clinical Social Work
Institute, Inc. which was the first of its kind to offer PhD’s in clinical social work. She is widely published;
her quintessential work is her co-authored book Windows Into Today’s Group Psychotherapy. The impact
of her work in mental health, education, and humanitarian aid reached global communities through her
work with people and organizations in Africa, Dubai, and Israel. Mary was a champion and vanguard in
the burgeoning field of theoretical signification of Large Group Dynamics.
In 1976, in addition to her family, clinical, and academic pursuits, Mary conceived of, designed, and
opened a successful, avant-garde health food restaurant with two partners in Alexandria, Virginia.
Mary had enough love to give so that no one who knew her ever had to do without. In addition to her
work, she enjoyed time at Hope Island, reading, cooking, world travel, tending to her plants, intellectual
conversations, her faith, family, friends, and peaceful walks in the neighborhood.
Words cannot express how much Mary Dluhy will be missed by those who knew her and even those who
did not. Rest in eternal peace Mary; you are loved!
