In 1964, she married Johnny Thomas, and together they raised two daughters, Gita and Sarah. In 1976, Mary and her daughters moved to America, joining her husband who had arrived two years earlier. They embraced a new beginning and laid a strong foundation for their family.
Mary began working for the City of Alexandria as a clerk typist in 1979. She remained there for many years, steadily growing in her role while supporting her family. She and Johnny also brought several family members from India, helping them as they settled into new opportunities. Mary later retired early to care for her husband.
Mary was the backbone of her family. Her tenacity and unwavering sense of responsibility created a life of stability for those she loved. A gifted cook, she could prepare delicious dishes and meat curries despite being a vegetarian. Her kitchen, and the home she and Johnny shared, radiated comfort and community.
Mary passed away on November 30, 2025, at the age of 88. She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny, and her siblings, CK Mammen and Aleyamma Varghese. She is survived by her daughters, Gita and Sarah; sons-in-law, Shaji and Steve; grandchildren, Priya, Joshua, Conor, Hannah, and Kamala; her siblings, Annama Varghese, CK Varghese, and Achama Varghese, nieces, Vincy and Jasmine; and many extended family members, including Mary and Job, Joy and Jessy, and Mini and Achenkunj.
Her love was unconditional and quietly powerful, leaving a lasting legacy of resilience, ambition, and togetherness.
