Matthew grew up in Shanghai China with is Father Andrew and his four siblings John, Agnes, Dominic and Francisca. His childhood was harsh. He immigrated to the United States in September 1949 together with his oldest sister Francisca.
He served in the US Army and began studying medicine after his naturalization as a US-Citizen in December 1953.
He struggled to reunite with his surviving siblings who had fled Shanghai to Brazil and eventually could immigrate to the US in the late 1960s.
He married his wife Sabine in July 1974. His son Philip was born in August 1977.
Next to the dedication to his work as a Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist and the uncompromising advocacy for the patients in his care, Matthew was a well-read, funny and entertaining person, who enjoyed company and good food. He had a keen mind that enjoyed politics, history, art, music and spirituality and could always produce a treasure trove of facts on nearly any subject.
More than anything else, he cared for the people whose paths he crossed and left traces of the good he could do in their lives.
Our family is grateful for the life he has lived and the well-deserved peace he has found.
